We salt and pepper our mango

Mia

“Blaze a blaze galang a lang a lang lang, purple haze galang a lang a lang lang.” Remember that song from English/Indian girl named M.I.A.? Well she is back with a follow up album to her critically acclaimed debut of 2005 “Arular”. The new album is called “Kala” and musically it is as colorful as her website that makes your eyes pop up. The production took place all over the planet in India, Africa, Trinidad, Australia, the States and England – so you would be right calling it “world music”. Compared to “Arular” this album is less danceable but equally rough, full of sounds that our Western ears have never heard of. She features some interesting collaborations, for example with a group of aboriginal kids from the Outback of Australia for the Song “Down River”. Of course there is also one track produced by Timberland (who would have guessed) called “Come Around”. But this one isn’t all that new since it was already featured as a b-side for his own album “Shock Value” (which wasn’t all that shocking). More infos, audio clips and photos after the jump.

“Kala” is out on August 20th and the current single is “Boyz” available since June.
This year M.I.A. did not and is not planning to perform in Berlin, unfortunately. She had one gig at the Melt!-Club (Gloria) in Cologne last friday. But, more interestingly she will be the opening act for Björk at her Nimes/France concerts on August 21st (today!!!) and 23rd.

I love M.I.A. The new album is great, but not as great as Arular, I think. Some songs are really scary though… xxx
