A Nightmare on Friedrichstrasse

Nightmare on Friedrichstrasse at Scala

When I started this blog I never really had the intention to publish party photos. But after my first party post about the Wild Renate was so successful I figured it’d be smart to do more of that. Obviously this is something the people are interested in. So I took my digital camera out with me every once in a while to make some crappy pictures that required a lot of heavy photoshopping until they looked okay to be published. Since I got my first SLR camera earlier this year the quality of the photos really got bumped up a bit and with my last three sets I have the feeling that I’m really getting better at this. Wow, just imagine how it will be when I’m able to use more then just the automatic mode of my camera, ha ha!

I think it’s funny that I’m still being asked permission to use those photos of the Wild Renate by inflight magazines and mainstream newspapers. Everytime I say no and ask them to take a look around on the blog as there is way better material to be found, like the latest pictures from the Nightmare on Friedrichstrasse III party at Scala from Saturday that you can find more of after the click.

  2. Frank Frank Says:

well I take this comparrison as a great compliment, especially coming from a photographer!

The first picture is to me just shocking. There is this incredibly beautiful girl but if you look closer you see like a sad expression in her eyes and her scars. It just speak to me.
I am not sure if I would post a picture like this. Or maybe retouch it? Well surely not. I am not sure. Perhaps somebody has an opinion about.

  4. David Says:

i dont wanna spam, but you asked if somebody has an optinion and i have one concerning this: i really wouldn’t retouch it, because she doesn’t cover her arms with a long shirt or something, she shows it more or less, so i think it seems to be not that big problem for her. and on the other picture she is smiling. and i think… you shouldn’t always show just pictures of jubilant party people who seem to have no problems in their life. i think such a photo has a right to exist, too. it’s realistic.

the party and the post were called Nightmare on Friedrichstrasse, and that was the picture that made the most sense as an opener. although I honestly didn’t see the scars until it was pointed out to me.

  6. Philipp Says:

the first photo is indeed brilliant as it shows much more than just a normal sloppy party girl. it would have a much better effect if it stood alone.
    really nice photos, frank.

  7. Joel Says:

The party, as well as the pictures made me wonder just one thing; exactly where does one find any sort of resemblance to a nightmare, or in fact anything that makes you want to slow down your scrolling in the faces of these kids?
The worst party in Berlin so far and the last time I ever go to Scala

hm, I didn’t get the name Nightmare as well. Maybe it’s because they played all sorts of music including indie and alternative stuff which is a nightmare to the usual electro club kids? But I think it just is a fun play on words and therefore a catchy title.
But if you disliked the party so much, Joel, then I guess the title is very suitable after all, right? ;)

Regardless of the music they play I have always appriciated Scala as it brings together a mix of people including young and old (see background of 2nd picture!), club kids and indie folk, hipsters and “normal” people. They don’t have an arrogant door policy like other “hip” places, everyone can come here and have a good time without feeling out of place.

    great pictures…and cool party :)

  10. Claudio Cr Says:

Still not sure if this was the kind of exposure the girl was looking forward to. But absolutely a stunning picture.
