The Weekly Event Guide – Art & Music Special

Chicks On Speed

Oh my god, this is one of those weeks where the event guide takes me forever to finish because of the art week, Berlin Festival and Berlin Music Week taking place at the same time. That is simply an overload of events, worse than Fashion Week! Okay, let’s cut right to it. There is a massive amount of art events going on. We have selected the four main big shows as well as a few smaller ones. You should definately check out our art blog experts from Castor & Pollux and Private Curators to find out more about all of this. Look after the jump for all art, music and what-not event recommendations…

Tuesday, Sept. 6

Art satire video blog ArtStars* is inviting to cupcakes and cocktails to celebrate the inofficial opening of the art week at NODE, Waldemarstr. 37a from 18-21h. Cheers!

CircleCulture Gallery opens a new solo show by San Francisco based painter Kevin Earl Taylor. His surrealistic animal paintings are quite unusual for the gallery that is otherwise known for bringing the best street artists from the streets into the gallery. Taylor’s exhibition Deviant Instinct is opening at Gipsstr. 11 starting at 19h. The exhibition runs until October 15th, 2011.

The Berliner Kunstsalon is the smallest of the four big art shows taking place this week. On Tuesday the opening reception starts at 17h at Uferhallen, Uferstr. 9 in Wedding. The trade show is open Wed-Sat from 14-22h and on Sunday from 12-20h. More information about the program here.

While back in July it was Berlin Fashion Week, it is now Berlin Music Week with lots of events, parties and concerts in several venues all over the city from Wednesday to Sunday. Take a look at the website to learn more about the program. Note there is a combo ticket for the Berlin Music Week and the Berlin Festival available here.

The abc Art Berlin Contemporary show is probably the most anticipated of the four big art shows. It’s concept is a bit different than the other three as it’s a curated exhibition not so concentrated on the actual trading. Unlike the other shows this one only exhibits one artist per gallery and is more like a curated selection of artwork. This year’s theme is paintings. The opening takes place at Station Berlin, Luckenwalderstr. 4-6, on Wednesday 18-21h. The exhibition is open Thu-Sat 12-21h and Sun 12-19h. More here.

The Berliner Liste is the art show for more classic and established art. The trade show takes place at Trafo, Köpenickerstr. 70 from Thursday to Saturday from 13-21h and on Sunday from 13-19h. The opening event takes place on Wednesday from 18-23h. More information about the exhibiting galleries here.

Thursday, Sept. 8

The Preview Berlin is the art show that concentrates on emerging and outstandig young artists. It opens on Thursday with reception at Tempelhof Airport, Hangar 2, Columbiadamm 10. It’s open from Friday to Sunday from 13-20h. Look here for details.

The Hamburger Bahnhof is showing the Prize for Young Art 2011 by the National Galerie. The four nominees are art shooting star Cyprien Gaillard, as well as Klara Liden, Kitty Kraus and Andro Wekua. The exhibition runs until January 2012. The winner will be announced on September 28, 2011. Invalidenstr. 50-51, Tue-Fri 10-18h, Sat 11-20h, Sun 11-18h.

Friday, Sept. 9

The Chicks on Speed are not only musicians they are all-round-artists with many skills. They have put together an exhibition called Culture Workship Now! that combines their view on art, fashion, music and performance, also featuring the work of designer Vladimir Karaleev and street artist Anton Unai as well as others. There is gonna be a big opening on Friday starting at 19h at Kunstquartier Bethanien, Mariannenplatz 2. The exhibition runs until October 23, 2011. From Sept. 14-17 the exhibition will be accompanied by a program of workshops, talks and performances at the old chapel that is now called Studio 1 at the Bethanien.

The Berlin Festival starts today with amazing artists such as Hercules And Love Affair, Santigold, Austra, Yelle, Oh Land, James Blake and many more at Tempelhof Airport. Get your tickets here. For your convenience they created an iPhone App to manage your schedule at the festival. Also, the special exhibition project Artvillage that takes place at the festival grounds is calling all festival visitors to show up in fancy costumes. The nicest ones have the chance to win amazing prices such as tickets to Reading Festival and Melt! 2012.

The Strychnin Gallery opens the new groups show Valley of the Dolls at Boxhagener Str. 36, starting at 19h. The name already says that this is about doll sculptures. The exhibition runs until October 2nd.

Get your fancy outfits ready again for another trip to the fabulous 80s at the Blitz party. This time the traveling glamourama is taking place at SKR at Skalitzerstr. 36 (next to Soju Bar). Starts at midnight!
