Listening to music with Wild Nothing

Dream Pop – that seems to be one of the most important music genres in 2012. Next in line are Wild Nothing, a one man band by Jack Tatum. Just recently, he released Nocturne – an album that is perfectly made for this time of the year. In our interview with Jack we have talked about music by Pavement, Sonic Youth, Kate Bush and Young Men. On November 15, Wild Nothing are playing a concert in Berlin. More after the jump.

Pavement – We Are Underused

Pavement is one of those bands that I never really got into for some reason. I had “Slanted And Enchanted” growing up which I actually enjoyed quite a bit, but that’s pretty much where my Pavement fandom starts and ends.

This song doesn’t do a whole lot for me. I like the intro for this song, the really quiet harpsichord progression. Then it just gets a bit too wordy and noodly for my taste. “Noodly” probably isn’t a word that translates to German well, but sometimes I’m just not in the mood for guitar solos. This is noodly.

Sonic Youth – Sunday

Not necessarily one my favorite Sonic Youth songs, but I’m into this video. I started LOLing when Macaulay Culkin and Thurston Moore are rocking out on the banjos. The whole slow motion kissy face thing feels indulgent but whatever, this is pretty cool. I dig it.

Kate Bush – Cloudbusting

Just, the best. You’ve got Donald Sutherland. You’ve got Kate Bush pretending to be a little boy. What’s not to like? I don’t know if people give Kate Bush enough credit for being such a weirdo. She always did her own thing and it’s always been amazing. Obviously I liked this song enough to cover it once. It’s one of my favorites and I love the narrative behind the song and video.

Young Man – Fate

This is either totally on purpose or a completely freaky coincidence, but I was actually in the studio when Young Man was recording the followup to this record. Pretty sure it’s not out yet, but they recorded it in Brooklyn with Nicolas Vernhes who also produced my new album “Nocturne”. Young Man was recording around the same time as I was and I was assisting Nicolas in the studio while they were tracking, setting up microphones and patching cables. That kind of thing.

I think this song “Fate” must be from an older album. I don’t actually know a lot about these guys but I spent some time with them and they’re all very young and very friendly. This song is pretty cool. Definitely sounds like the stuff they recorded while I was in the studio. It’s not really the kind of music I would necessarily listen to on my own but I like it. Simple video is quite nice too.

Wild Nothing – Shadow

Yeah, this is the first single from “Nocturne”. In my eyes it’s a pretty ideal single because it’s actually a bit different from the rest of the album so it’s able to stand on it’s own. This track also inspired my favorite Youtube comment EVER about my music: “new order meets bach… then bach has a baby with tiny tim……” Just try and wrap your head around that one.
