The Haunted Ferris Wheel of Spreepark

The Haunted Ferris Wheel of Spreepark

For the fans of American Horror Story this makes a great setting for the unraveling of gruesome and spooky plotlines. The ferris wheel used to be part of the Spreepark, a theme park in Treptow Köpenick that opened in 1969 as Kulturpark Plänterwald. Unfortunately, a lack of ample parking space and a rise in the price of the ticket led to the closing of the park on the onset of the current century. What followed was an unbelievable series of stories about the park and its owner that far exceeds the notoriousness of most other abandoned places in Berlin. The following spectacular drone video made by a Swedish drone flyer and urban explorer showcases the park, as it is now; abandoned and forgotten with the ferris wheel moving slowly in the wind as if ghosts keep it company to make it forget its eternal loneliness. read more…

Street Art in Berlin: The Interaction of Murals

Street Art in Berlin: The Interaction of Murals

Street art is alive and kicking in Berlin; what better proof for this ongoing development than the several new murals scattered all over the city? The best part is that you are most likely to discover a new one, every time you take a different path on your way to work, home, etc.; and while you are walking down the street immersed in and overwhelmed by your worries, you lift your head and there you see one: colorful or in black-white, depicting figures or people, they are always striking; as if they have the power to grab you from the pool of thoughts you so gladly swim in, and show you a different world, much more refreshing and easy-going. On the pictures below you can see people (inter)acting with the murals consciously and unconsciously. It is truly remarkable how present they are in our everyday life and how they can have an impact on our mood so easily.

Charmed by Autumn in Berlin

Autumn: the time of the year, when everything goes back into place; most people are back from their holidays in their “normal” life with all the responsibilities and struggles that come along with it. This change or rather transition is also reflected in the weather: temperatures decrease a bit but not to the point of forcing you to resemble an eskimo and the atmosphere is imbued with an impeccable nostalgia for the end of the Summer and all that you experienced in combination with a curiosity and motivation to see how your upcoming plans and life will develop.

Nature plays along having her countless leaves in beautiful, earthy colors that decorate the soulless concrete of the streets and pavements as well as parks. Although it does not fulfill the criteria of nice weather Autumn really does capture nature’s alternative beauty.

How to find a Room in Berlin

How to find a Room in Berlin

Only few things can prove harder than finding a place to stay upon moving to Berlin. We have all had our fair share of stories in our quest to find a decent room somewhere relatively close to where the wild things are. On the plus side, the German capital is huge with various “centers” showcasing many beautiful neighborhoods to live in. However, this might be the only good thing about the Berliner housing situation, since prices have risen greatly as a result of the huge demand in the last few years. Looking for a place can prove exhausting, frustrating and intensely distressing.

The main lessons I have learnt from the housing hunting are to be able to sell myself in every possible way and never give back. To avoid any misunderstandings, your search for accomodation should become a salient issue among friends, relatives and pretty much anybody who could potentially help you out. Looking for a room or an apartment resembles some aspects of a campaign. It is not sufficient to create a profile on a few online platforms, such as WG-Gesucht or Easy-WG, and copy-paste your message in response to a few ads you saw.
