Post Graffiti

Mode 2

This Friday, one of my favourite galleries in Mitte Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery and Urban Affairs extended will be hosting a vernissage to introduce their latest collabo Post Graffiti – a collection of seven internationally renowned street and graffiti artists from the likes of Sharp, Delta, Mode 2, Eron, Neon, Ebon Heath and Czarnobyl, most of whom have added their creative talent to the Berlin street art landscape and beyond. And if you still think I’m going on about chemical elements and Greek alphabets, then slap me silly, call me Sally and check here and here before you set down your aerosol cans and flick to more pics after the jump.

Font Heroes

buchstabenmuseum_03

Hi my name is Diwa and I’m a font fan. Yes, I won’t deny it. It’s true. There are a few things that pull at my heart-strings such as the smell of coffee, art, flea markets, beaches, bubbles and fonts. You know the feeling, it starts your tummy and runs up your spine Sometimes it ends in a high. Like buying a new pair of shoes. Or lying on your favourite beach. Or reading something on your favourite font.

And so, I was very excited as my attention was recently drawn towards the Buchstabenmuseum (Museum of the Letter) in Mitte. They’re real font heroes in my opinion. If you’re curious to know why, then read on after the jump.

In an Enchanted World

Twilight Forest Explosion by Camille Rose Garcia

Twilight Forest Explosion by Camille Rose Garcia

Last weekend we took a little stroll through the galleries of Berlin and found some wonderful treasures we would like to share. After falling in love with a painting of Nicoletta Ceccoli at Strychnin we came across the Merry Karnowsky Gallery, a relatively new art space at Torstraße, that currently hosts it’s first anniversary exhibition Hard Left 2 that was also part of the character walk of the Pictopia Festival. The first thing that caught my attention there was a big mural covered with a set of paintings with Blue & Joy, two characters invented by Italien artists Fabio la Fauci and Daniele Sigalot. But our favorite piece of the day was hidden in the back room: The enchanted ice bear by Camille Rose Garcia that had us coming back to that room and admire it several times. All the mentioned pieces and details about the exhibition after the jump.

Bombs Away

Bombs Away at Strychnin Gallery

To be honest, I have never really been impressed with logo graffitis. But what the Strychnin Gallery made out of this theme is just really cool. They let a group of graffiti artists paint on miniature trains and create a mural on one of the walls in the gallery that was covered with empty canvases. The exhibition Bombs Away opened with great success last Friday. The urban art genre is pretty uncommon for Strychnin so it was pretty interesting to see a whole different audience there. As a little goodie they gave out spray cans and hung up some empty panels outside the gallery to spray on. More photos and details after the jump.

I’m going to make this one short and sweet since I’m juggling moving into a new flat, scheduling meetings in the sun and trying to reorganise my weekly schedule to fit this exhibition opening in!

A new exhibition by Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon is dropping this Thursday evening at the Circleculture Gallery. If artistic depictions inspired by skateboarding, graffiti and punk are enough to get your freak on, then lace up those kicks and bounce on down after the jump.

The last one of his kind

We Praise God - Goetz Valien, 2007

We Praise God – Goetz Valien, 2007

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for the giant painted movie posters that you can see on some movie theaters here in Berlin, for example at Kino International or at Cinema Paris? I always liked those and I think it’s sad that you see them less and less. Goetz Valien is the artist who painted all of them, and since 1992 he is the last one of his kind. This coming Friday he opens an exhibition at the Loop gallery that shows his work besides the movie posters. After the jump you’ll find his take on Angela Merkel, Kylie Minogue, Titian’s Venus and more nudity…

Whaleless

Ryan Obermeyer - Sonar

Sonar – Ryan Obermeyer

The Strychnin Gallery in Friedrichshain is opening a wonderful new exhibition dedicated to whales this Friday. Whaleless is a project initiated by Italian curators Giovanni Cervi and Res Pira and PIG Magazine to raise awareness of the endangerment of the species and its possible global consequences. Many artists from all over the world have submitted their whale-themed artworks and since last July a selection of them have been touring around in the shape of a group exhibition. Find our more and see some samples after the jump.

Qrazy Ling’s Grand Opening

Qrazy Ling

On Saturday a supposedly new hotspot in Friedrichshain celebrated its grand opening. Qrazy Ling is not only an Asian restaurant, it’s also a lounge, a bar, a shop and an art space. So many things in one, qrazy, I know. We went to see what it is all about, and quite frankly, it looks promissing. With its traditianal Asian restaurant interior it reminds me a bit of a small Asian version of the White Trash. The food is yet to be tested, but what we saw on the tables looked nicely done. The enclosed What Ever gallery offers a small selection of urban art and wear. Go look after the jump for more photos of the party and the place.

Lynch Me!

Lynchmob at BHC Kollektion

Yesterday we went to see the new exhibition of the BHC Kollektiv and Kollektiv Berlin at HBC. I must say, this space never disappoints me, no matter if it’s an exhibition or a party. The new group show Lynchmob exhibits a great number of artworks all inspired by cult director David Lynch, ranging from photography, sculpture, installation, painting, and video. I saw a lot of amazing things here, but I especially enjoyed a video piece in the Anton Unai room that essembles several key scenes from mystery, thriller and horror movies. See some impressions from the exhibition and infos after the jump. The exhibitions will end with a big Burlesque themed party next Saturday, so make sure to visit before that.
