Things to do AFTER Christmas

photo_41_hires1

I don’t know. This year I don’t feel like Christmas at all. I wish I could just skip it and go straight to NYE. But obviously I can’t avoid the family responsibilities and have to go home to spend the holiday with my folks. But that won’t keep me from already making plans for AFTER Christmas to sooth me over the fest of boredom until I’m back in Berlin. Find out what I’ll be doing and what I recommend you should do as well after the jump.

Dinner at the Swan Lake

Restaurant Schönbrunn

A while back we tried out the Restaurant of the Cafe Schönbrunn at Volkspark Friedrichshain. So far I have only been to the cheaper beer garden that is located directly next to it. But the white table cloths and fancy plates on the terrace tempted us, so we made a reservation on a warm summer night to enjoy a dinner at the swan lake. I must admit that I haven’t seen any swans in the lake, but the atmosphere was great and the food was fantastic, in taste as well as in presentation. It is a bit on the pricer side with dishes ranging from 12-22 EUR, but I think it is worth it. I had roasted Barbarie duck and CR had sword fish in sesame crust with mangold. I can really recommend both of them. More images and details after the jump.

Grilled Rips at the Spree

White Trash’s Strandmarkt

I’m sure some of you passed by this place several times while traveling on the S-Bahn. From above it looks a little like a pirate themed adventure park. But actually it is the beach bar and grill by the owners of the White Trash Fast Food. Located directly at the spree it offers a lot of space and some delicious grill rips that I can’t get enough of! It is also pretty family friendly. More after the jump.

It’s Terry, again

Terry Richardson for Belvedere Vodka

The Tom Ford For Men campaign was only a few months ago and here we are with another encounter with shock-in-style photographer Terry Richardson. This time in moving format and not even that shocking (it kind of get’s old to hold your penis into the picture, doesn’t it?). Just recently he directed a spot for Belvedere Vodka together with Vincent Gallo and RZA, all of them appearing in the video. Check out the video and more infos after the jump.

A Cake Success Story

Cherry Cheese Cake by Cynthia Barcomi

As you might have noticed we have a weakness for cake - especially if it is as rich and tasty as the cakes of Cynthia Barcomi. And I know a lot of people will agree on that. She has been baking cakes for her roastery Barcomi’s since 1994, and all those coffee lovers and cake addicts of Kreuzberg have helped to make it a great success.

Now, 14 years later, she not only runs a roastery in Kreuzberg but also a deli in the heart of Mitte. Last year her cakes even helped her to become popular outside of Berlin when she released her first and very own baking book in which she shares some of her special Barcomi’s recipes. We met the American in Berlin for a piece of carrot cake and a chat about Berlin, books and baking goods.

We heart Japanese noodles

Susuro interior

Not only is this Japanese restaurant extremely nice to look at, it also serves excellent food. The Susuru offers a variety of authentic delicious Japanese noodle soups on a regularly changing menu, as well as some side dishes they refer to as Japanese Tapas. We expecially like Edamame, a small snack consisting of young soy beans in sea salt, the Chicken Curry Udon, which is a very hip dish in Japan right now, and the Matcha Macchiato, which is hot milk with green tea powder. Read on for more infos, photos and a short video. Read on - Weiterlesen »

The Cupcake Lady

Cupcake Berlin

What was once totally unknown to us has now become one of our favourite daily treats: Cupcakes. And who do we have to thank for that pleasure: Dawn Nelson from Cupcake Berlin, whom we fondly refer to as The Cupcake Lady. Her sinful cupcakes are in great demand. Not only do the inhabitants of Friedrichshain love them, she also made celebrities like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise addicted while they were filming at Babelsberg. But Dawn has not always been a cupcake baker. She was born and raised in Florida, but moved around the states a lot working as a makeup artist for MAC cosmetics and as a freelancer. That’s probably the reason why her cupcakes look tres chic. The pink creams and purple sprinkles must be the remnants of her days of rouge and eyeshadows. We had a little chat with her about Berlin and cupcakes for our feature series “The Makers”. Read the interview and see some photos after the jump. Read on - Weiterlesen »

Fairytales with Eva Mendes

Campari calendar 2008 with Eva Mendes

The Italiens seem to have it with fancy things, don’t they. And what could be fancier than a meltdown of Italian designer dresses, a fashion photographer, a hot young Hollywood actress, a handful of half naked male models, 12 fairy tales and a bottle of blood red liquor? The outcome is the 9th Campari calender with photos of Eva Mendes (We Own The Night, Ghostrider) in designer dresses of Max Chaoul, Roberto Cavalli, Alberta Ferretti and Elie Saab shot by Marino Parisotto depicting scenes from fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. The calendar is available in a limited adition of 9999 copies wordwide. More photos after the jump.
