Music Television re-invented

Tape

The Makers: Interview with tape.tv creator Conrad Fritzsch

That music television nowadays is poluted by cheesy reality shows and ringtone ads really is a shame to me. The non-stop music channel MTV Music that you can receive digitally is an ok substitute, but when you have that running in the background you get the feeling that they are playing the same videos over and over again. Stumbling upon tape.tv a few month back was somehow like finding the holy grail. Here I found a seemingly endless number of music videos played in a row. And not only the mainstream stuff, also some undiscovered pearls that make the whole thing worth while. You can even influence the playlist by entering an artist or genre that you like.

We’ve met up with Conrad Fritzsch, the founder of tape.tv, and talked to him about music, television and Berlin. More of that after the jump.

It’s a mad world

atak-jaeger

The Makers: Interview with artist ATAK

A mouse chasing the cat, a hare shooting the hunter and an animal tamer jumping through a burning hoop. In his great picture book Verrückte Welt Berlin-based artist ATAK turns the world upside down. Every time I flip through it I discover more and more funny details which I haven’t seen before: There’s Ernie from Sesame Street sitting in a window and there’s a Matisse print hanging on the wall. The remarkable thing about ATAKs book is the rough and handmade look of his paintings. You can even see every brushstroke. And although it looks like a children’s book it surely is also suitable for adults.

ATAK is an all-round artist and always very busy. He’s drawing comic strips, illustrating books and writing columns. Above all he recently became a professor for communications design in Halle. So I really understand why it was so hard to get him on the phone. But fortunately I did catch him for an interview for our series The Makers. After the jump ATAK tells us what advantages Berlin has compared to Paris and London.

The Tailors of Opulence

Scherer Gonzalez - Spring/Summer 2009

The Makers: Interview with designer duo Scherer Gonzalez

My Italian family is always a bit skeptical when it comes to German fashion. My grandmother starts snoring, my mother rises her eyebrow and my aunt just looks at me like I am talking about a very hard to manage psychiatric disorder. But I am sure they would react differently if I would show them the couture dresses of Berlin-based design duo Scherer González. They have this incredible feeling for drama and opulence which is very compatible with the Italian taste for fashion. They gave us a little interview for our series The Makers that features portraits of different creative “Berliner”. They also kindly invited us to see their fashion show on Saturday which we are already looking forward to. The interview and more photos of their current Summer collection after the jump.

The Makers: Interview with perfume designer Geza Schoen

A few weeks ago we received an exclusive invitation to the Muenzsalon, one of the few members-only clubs in Berlin. There we had the pleasure to listen to the perfume creator Geza Schoen. The Berlin-based perfume designer talked about the different scents and ingredients of perfumes. He himself has had a quite interesting live so far. And customers like Dita von Teese, Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss testify for his talents. We have a lot to tell about our experience at the Muenzsalon. Today we will start with another issue of our feature series The Makers by interviewing Geza about Berlin and his inspiration.

A Cake Success Story

Cherry Cheese Cake by Cynthia Barcomi

As you might have noticed we have a weakness for cake - especially if it is as rich and tasty as the cakes of Cynthia Barcomi. And I know a lot of people will agree on that. She has been baking cakes for her roastery Barcomi’s since 1994, and all those coffee lovers and cake addicts of Kreuzberg have helped to make it a great success.

Now, 14 years later, she not only runs a roastery in Kreuzberg but also a deli in the heart of Mitte. Last year her cakes even helped her to become popular outside of Berlin when she released her first and very own baking book in which she shares some of her special Barcomi’s recipes. We met the American in Berlin for a piece of carrot cake and a chat about Berlin, books and baking goods.

The Cupcake Lady

Cupcake Berlin

What was once totally unknown to us has now become one of our favourite daily treats: Cupcakes. And who do we have to thank for that pleasure: Dawn Nelson from Cupcake Berlin, whom we fondly refer to as The Cupcake Lady. Her sinful cupcakes are in great demand. Not only do the inhabitants of Friedrichshain love them, she also made celebrities like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise addicted while they were filming at Babelsberg. But Dawn has not always been a cupcake baker. She was born and raised in Florida, but moved around the states a lot working as a makeup artist for MAC cosmetics and as a freelancer. That’s probably the reason why her cupcakes look tres chic. The pink creams and purple sprinkles must be the remnants of her days of rouge and eyeshadows. We had a little chat with her about Berlin and cupcakes for our feature series “The Makers”. Read the interview and see some photos after the jump. Read on - Weiterlesen »

Wild At Harp

Simonetta Ginelli by André Rival

In the last couple of years harpist Simonetta Ginelli has made a name for herself in the music and entertainment scene of Berlin, but not only as a musician. Everytime she sets her foot on stage you’ll find her dressed up in a new costume: Sometimes as a sexy bride, sometimes as a lovely Christmas angel, covered in rubber as a hot dominatrix or sometimes even naked with her dress painted on her bare skin. Her clients seem to love her extravagant looks. That’s why she gets booked for glamarous events such as an Eyes Wide Shut party for Breitling, the erotic varieté show Belle Et Fou, the Wella Trend Vision Award in Paris or for the Aids Gala at Theater des Westens.

We met the busy harpist and talked with her about Berlin and her instrument. Photos and interview after the jump.

There goes the monster

Building A Rocket by Mateo

Building A Rocket, 98cm x 47cm

If you ever visited the flea market at Boxhagener Platz or the annual art market at Oberbaumbrücke you have probably stumbled across some of his creatures. They are green, hairy, slimy and disfigured, but still heart-warming and cute in their own morbid ways. May it be monsters, robots or funny looking animals. They all have a story to tell, drawn on wooden plates, window frames, signs and other left over surfaces of our society. Their father and creator is Californian artist and illustrator Mateo who relocated from San Francisco to Berlin in 2004 and opened his own gallery Zozoville together with Dutch art buddy Johan Potma whom he shares his passion for monsters with.
For our features series “The Makers” we’ve met Mateo and talked about Berlin, Monsters and Disney. Read on for more art, photos and the interview.

The Mad Hatter from Berlin

This is the first issue of our series “The makers”.

fiona bennett

“Hats are like secret dreams. I want people to fulfil their dreams with my hats.” says Fiona Bennett, a Berlin based hat maker with style. Well, we wouldn’t accuse her of being mad, but her hats are definately crazy - in a good way. She is making hats now for over 18 years and that with great success. Her creations are high in demand: Christina Aguilera, Roger Cicero, Rammstein, Ben Becker and Mia are just a few of her national and international clients. Her hats are available not only in her salon in Berlin, but also in London, Milan and Tokyo.
We met the charming creative and asked a few questions about Berlin and hats. Some shots of her new gentlemens collection, more infos and the full interview right after the jump. Read on - Weiterlesen »
