10 Awesome Burger Places in Berlin

When I moved from Denmark to Berlin in October 2014 I had no intentions of starting a food blog but of course I have always enjoyed eating burgers of any kind. Then I quit my call-center job in January and was thinking about starting this burger blog and so I did in February.

Denmark does not give you the chance to focus on for example burgers, it needs to be wider to survive. Because where I come from we do not have these magnificent burger places. The cliental is very limited and therefor only suitable for a franchise food chain. Copenhagen is the only place in Denmark where you can have a decent burger!
In Berlin I am totally ecstatic – there are literally burger joints “überall”. Some better than others of course but the standard is more than often high and the prices low. You can eat burgers from different cultures, Asian burgers and American burgers – big burgers and small burgers – expensive burgers and cheap burgers. Whatever you are searching for Berlin will provide food and shelter to your hunger!

For iHeartBerlin I created a list of 10 amazing burger places that include some of my favorites in town including brand new places and old beloved classics. I will not rank these burger joints but recommend every single one because to me they have something extra to offer. More burger reviews will follow on my blog Chessy Burger, but for now let’s enjoy these 10 amazing places.

Burgermeister

(Traditional fast food)

Hangover or sober, with friends or family you can go alone – Burgermeister is a green shed under the U-bahn in Schlesisches Tor. This was my first burger love in Berlin and still the place I more than often tell people to visit, mostly because of their cheap and extremely delicious burgers but also because of the awesome location! During Autumn and Winter time they have plastic walls to keep out rain and the killingly cold Winter breeze in Berlin – but these walls are all covered with stickers looking like a toilet from any Berlin bar (the little building the burger kitchen is located in is actually a former public toilet). Now in summer time the walls are taken down and you eat your burgers “open air” in noisy surroundings.

Tip: Try the Hausmeister or Meister aller Klassen

Burgermeister, Oberbaumstraße 8, 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg
Open Mon – Thur: 11:00 – 03:00, Fri – Sat: 11:00 – 4:00, Sun: 12:00 – 3:00

Bun Bao

(Bao Burger – Asian cuisine)

While it is a brand new restaurant at Kollwitzstraße in lovely Prenzlauer Berg it is not at all a new kid on the block. Bun Bao is famous for making the best original Bao Burger on numerous street food markets in Berlin. An original Bao Burger is with steamed buns, pork belly, nuts, cilantro and hoisin sauce.
Normally they had two varieties, one with pork belly and a vegetarian with tofu. But when opening a restaurant they needed more and they have 7 different burgers on their menu. That includes different meats and one vegetarian plus a vegan so please go there, vegetarian or not!

Tip: Try the wasabi mayonnaise with sweet potato fries.

Bun Bao, Kollwitzstraße 84, 10435 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg
Open Mon – Thur: 12:00 – 22:00, Fri – Sat: 12:00 – 23:00, Sun: 12:00 – 22:00

Bunsmobile

(Foodtruck)

I had the pleasure of eating a burger from Bunsmobile once on Potsdamer Platz around the time when the film festival Berlinale took place. Relive all your nature-hunting skills and go into the wild to hunt down Bunsmobile while you visit Berlin. Here during Summer time it is easy with all the street food markets. I will recommend you Neue Heimat with Berlin Village Market on Sundays, Markthalle Neun with Street Food on Thursdays and every second Friday Bite Club. Those are the locations that will attract Bunsmobile, or you will find it in front of the Urban Spree gallery.

Tip: Plan your Berlin trip and find Bunsmobile.

Ruben & Carla

(NY-style)

Ruben & Carla has become one of my favorite restaurants in Berlin. The first time I went to try their pastrami sandwich, which is breath-taking and to me the best in Berlin. My second visit was to try out their burger because I had heard the burger there are supposed to be insanely good. I went, I tasted and I was amazed.
I love the atmosphere, they have a nice staff, and you can look directly into the kitchen, which gives you the opportunity to follow the process.
Ruben & Carla is mostly about meat and therefor not a good place to take a first date, you do not know if she is vegetarian and the burgers will make your face dirty!

Tip: Go two together and share a Reuben Pastrami and burger menu – to try both.

Ruben & Carla, Linienstraße 136, 10115 Berlin-Mitte
Open Mon – Sat: 12:00 – 23:00, Sun: closed

Tommi’s Burger Joint

(Classic Burger Joint)

I do not fancy food chains and something that is more about business than the love to a craftsmanship. But I really love Tommi´s Burger Joint, I have visited them both in London, Copenhagen and of course Berlin. The quality of their product is sensational, the atmosphere cool (best in Copenhagen an old butchers shop). It is not commercialized so the prices are fair even in London and Copenhagen.
Thomas Andreas Tomason from Iceland founded this chain of burger joints. The first place opened in 1981 and soon he expanded to having 5 locations on Iceland. There are 10 Tommi´s Burger Joints total today and hopefully more to come.

Tip: Make a reservation and try the Béarnaise sauce for the fries.

Tommi´s Burger Joint, Invalidenstrasse 160, 10115 Berlin-Mitte
Open daily 12:00 – 22:00

Shiso Burger

(Korean)

Korean food is a must in Berlin right now, places are opening with very good food.
Shiso Burger did not open recently but it has like Burgermeister been one of my favourite places since I moved to Berlin. The best cheeseburger I have ever had is from Shiso Burger! The fries are freshly cut with this potato iron which you can see standing in the corner of the kitchen.
Always packed with people and it is cash only. BTW shiso is an Asian herb.

Tip: Try kimchi and two twisted potatoes.

Shiso Burger, Auguststrasse 29, 10119 Berlin-Mitte
Open daily 12:00 – 24:00

An Einem Sonntag im August

(Vegetarian)

The first place where I have not eaten a burger packed with beef, bacon and cheddar. At this wonderful place in Prenzlauer Berg they have made an only vegetarian burger menu. Five different burgers all made with a beetroot patty, homemade buns, fresh salad and delicious sides.
Many people forget about vegetarians when it comes to burgers, normally burgers joints have one-maybe two vegetarian burgers and more then often they suck. As a huge meat lover and bacon enjoyer I found these vegetarian burgers very interesting, tasty and fresh.
After eating a lot of meat, fries and bread you feel heavy. A feeling you will not get from vegetarian burgers!

Tip: Try the Crunchy Nut burger with Brie cheese.

An Einem Sonntag im August, Kastanienallee 103, 10435 Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg
Open daily from 9:00 – late

Dudes Delikatessen

(Burger Heaven)

A lot of booze, even more meat and a ship load of beer. That to me will be defining Dudes Delikatessen and that is exactly what this is.
They serve burgers with pulled pork or pulled beef, cheese, bacon and sides. Beverages vary from liquors as whiskey, rum, and gin or have a beer from tap. You can take your friends on a Saturday night before it gets really dirty and take it further when the Dudes close.
Then the following Sunday you go there for a single or double hangover burger which can very well cure your mistake or mistakes from the day before.

Tip: Try some of their delicious alcohol, too.

Dudes Delikatessen, Schlesische Strasse. 19, 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg
Open daily 12:00 – 23:30

Piri’s Chicken Burger

(Best Chicken Burger)

Former champion from the burger celebration event Burgers and Hip/Hop where the judges are the people attending and eating the burgers – very democratic.
If you will need a chicken burger while visiting Berlin, this is definitely the place you need to be. Their spicy chicken burger can be very spicy so look out for the little chilli pepper in the menu.
Every Monday they have Manic Monday. From 16:00 you can therefor buy burgers for 3€ pr. burger and it is the normal sizes. That is worth mentioning if you plan to eat out non-stop during a visit.

Tip: Have something a little spicy with chicken.

Piri´s Chicken Burger, Wiener Straße 31, 10999 Berlin-Kreuzberg
Open daily Mon – Sun 12:00 – 22:00

5Places

(Newly opened)

5Places is a brand new place on Simon-Dach-Straße – small hole in the wall burger joint with a few seats inside and outside. The menu is 5 different burgers to fill your five senses and then you can also choose the Signature Burger which cost 3,8€ and add extras like cheeses, bacon, onions and so as you like. Please order the sweet potato fries and with the wasabi mayonnaise. The place is new, the burgers are cheap and when comparing price with quality than this place is fantastic!

Tip: Add bacon as extra. It will give a nice smoked flavor to your burger.

5Places, Simon-Dach-Str. 30, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain
Open Mon – Thur: 11:00 – 01:00, Fri – Sun: 11:00 – 03:00
