Over the last 100 years, Berlin has changed into several drastic shapes like no other city in Germany. Every time a shift happened not only the urban aesthetic of Berlin evolved but also the layer that lies beneath our everyday routines: Sound!
For the next chapter of Audi Zeitgeist Projects, a unique commitment of the automotive brand to support German Avantgarde-music, this unique sound of Berlin will be presented in a completely new way. Several well-known musicians like Gudrun Gut and Modeselektor came together to compose a Symphony of Now – merging the sound of Berlin with a spectacular movie being released earlier this year.
On the occasion of the upcoming premiere of Symphony of Now we decided to have a deeper look into Berlin’s movie history and we found several films that portray the sound of Berlin in different decades perfectly.
Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt – The Spirit of Grandeur
This movie from 1927 film describes a day of Berlin life in all its beauty of the golden twenties. It shows a city that is thriving and growing through the industrial revolution. This movie was also the inspiration for Symphony of Now. A must watch for all history fans of Berlin.
Menschen am Sonntag – The Sound of Everyday Life
This particular movie from the 30s is similar to Sinfonie der Großstadt and also completely different at the same time. It shows a young group of friends having a little trip to the lakes on a Sunday. In contrast to Sinfonie der Großstadt, the portrayed people are normal workers and enjoy the simple things in life. Just a couple of years ago the avant-garde band Mum rediscovered this movie and created a live concert to it which they are now playing on a regular basis at Radialsystem V.
Geniale Dilletanten – A New Wave Documentary
This unique gem of Berlin music documentary is a real 80’s flashback. It showcases artists and bands such as Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten, Nick Cave of the Bad Seeds, Mora Mur and Malaria!, and the director Jim Jarmusch. This movie is a great reflection of a period where the city was torn between a rough and vibrant underground and superficial and hedonistic party scene.
Linie 1 – A Berlin Musical just before the Wall came down
Scoring as my personal all-time favorite Berlin musical, this movie tells the story of an innocent girl from Westgermany coming to Berlin looking for a boy who is not calling back. (lol) I don’t want to spoil the plot to you but I recommend you to watch it so you can discover a unique side of Berlin humor captured on film.
Symphony of Now – A Unique Collaboration of Berlin Talents
Inspired by the famous black and white movie: Die Sinfonie der Grosstadt, Symphony of Now is a colorful and vibrant ride through today’s Berlin.
