How to Choose the Right Time to go to Berghain

How to Choose the Right Time to go to Berghain

If you are into House and Techno and live in Berlin, you probably don’t need any Berghain advice anymore. You most likely already call this place your living room. Anyone who’s not as experienced with the Techno Temple, but actually really wants to go, can easily get confused by all the unfamiliar names on the line up  So, should you go Saturday night at 4, Sunday morning at 7, or Sunday evening around 6? Where to start if you really want to experience what all the fuzz is about? At a club where every DJ set runs for at least 4 hours and your normal party stamina lasts for about 5 hours tops, you should pick your time and DJ wisely. Gladly, there is a website for that now created by Artiom Dashinsky. On dahinsky all the data of 8 years of Berghain bookings have been put into well organized, easy-to-read statistics. So, not judging individual musical styles and only trusting in OstGut Ton booking certain artists over and over again for a reason, you should watch out for the following DJs and their time slots in the next Klubnach line-up.

The Club ABC

The Club ABC

Berlin is famous for many things but undeniably, these days Berlin’s most infamous reputation is due to its incredible nightlife. And, no nightlife without club spaces and dance floors to make us shake our booty into the early hours of Sunday… or even Monday… or in Berlin actually, just pick a day. However, before you can go out and get your fantasy decisions need to be made. The versatility of this city is both a curse and a blessing. It’s not as easy as the bar down the street with that cute bartender and a decent Spotify playlist. That’s like sitting in front of a box of delicious candy and only eating one thing. So, to get you started or to keep you on track, we tried to bring the hedonistic chaos of Berlin’s club life in (alphabetical) order accompanied by some informative, slightly subjective comments. Everything from bars with a dance floor to multiroom clubs made it into the list and, if not further noted (of course) Electronic Music will be played in Techno capital. Enjoy our little selection.

Holzmarkt – Berlin’s Unique Urban Oasis

Holzmarkt – Berlin’s Unique Urban Oasis

Who would have thought in the mid 2000s that a tiny shack of scrap wood on an abandoned lot at the river Spree would ever become the quirky urban oasis that is the Holzmarkt today?

It was in the year 2004 when I stepped into the so-called Bar25 for the first time. At the time it was a tiny improvised bar made of recycled wood at the end of an overgrown footpath in the wastelands of the Spree riverbanks in Friedrichshain. There was no techno party going on there, just the comfort of a worn out couch and some beers. I was on a date then that I hardly remember now, but I remember the place because it became of one the most legendary international techno clubs and a hub for youth culture of the post-millennium era.

Over the course of the next 7 years the buzz around this inconspicuous little place became louder and louder. I dropped by every now an then observing their journey to techno heaven and international fame. The bar grew bigger ever year, adding a small circus arena, a pizza parlor, a restaurant, a spa, a pool, a hostel and more cute little things to its world making it a little paradise that you never wanted or needed to leave. They started the whole cult of going to a place and not leaving it for 5 days straight. You didn’t have to, because there was everything you needed – plus a swing with a lovely view of the sunset over the Berlin city silhouette. There was a lot of feathers, confetti and glitter involved, something that set the Bar25 apart from it’s more understated neighbor Berghain that opened around the same time as them.

A Lovely Piece of Shit – Theater Meets Club Culture

A Lovely Piece of Shit – Theater Meets Club Culture

Berlin loves trash. Especially when it is on the interdisciplinary intersection between performance art and club culture. This Friday is the premiere of a A Lovely Piece of Shit, a dance theater performance at the club Mensch Meier by the Swiss theater company Extraleben. This piece is all about a fairy tale land called Wummerland where unicorns eat techno bass, the mirror always smiles back at you and nobody ever thinks about tomorrow. I don’t know about you but this setting reminds me a bit the Fusion Festival, where everybody escapes once a year to have a colorful peter pan experience. In any case we are really looking forward to this attempt to combine theater and party experience. Also I think that it is a wonderful opportunity to check out this new club that everybody is speaking about right now. Check out some photos and the trailer after the jump. read more…

Exploring Berlin: Hanging Out in Kreuzberg

Exploring Berlin: Hanging Out in Kreuzberg

Following the spirit of our Exploring Berlin series we want to look at another district today and show you our favorite places there. This time we chose the one that we are surrounded by the most as our office at Blogfabrik is located right in the middle of it. I’m talking about Kreuzberg of course, probably one of the most popular districts of Berlin at the moment.

People who come to Berlin just love it here. It’s buzzing and it’s relaxed at the same time. It offers everything from delicious food, compelling art, pulsating nightlife and cultural entertainment. But apart from all of that Kreuzberg is particularly good for one thing: Just hanging out and having a good time. So we drove around in the past days dropping by the most beloved hang-out spots of the Berliners and snapping some photos for you. By the way all of the photos in this feature have been taken with the new Sony Xperia Z5 smartphone (versus the Z1 or my SLR that I normally use) which is being presented at the IFA these days. But now let’s dive into our favorite places in Kreuzberg.

Party Ruins – A History of Berlin’s Club Culture

Party Ruins – A History of Berlin’s Club Culture

With events scattered around the city and free of charge the festival FUTUR25 celebrates the German reunion this upcoming weekend. Some may ask: Didn’t we celebrate the same thing last year? But no. Last year we celebrated the anniversary of the fallen wall with illuminated balloons along the way of the wall. What had become reality for the people only became politically official with the signing of the German reunion contracts, which happened a year later.

FUTUR25 now celebrates the 25th anniversary of this political milestone with great installations, exhibitions and concerts. Radialsystem V serve as the centre of the festival, but is certainly not the only venue! The section Trümmern und Träumen (“ruins and dreaming”) is for us the most exciting one as it focuses on the developments of the Berlin Club scene, brings important figures back on stage, and takes you around on rickshaws to the locations of previously legendary clubs and those that still exist after a wild history of over two decades.

Read more about a couple of the program highlights and see some archive photographs of long forgotten clubs and parties after the jump…
