Kinky Fine Dining Deluxe: Culinary Climaxing at The Noname

With its mysterious name, the Berghain-esque “no” at the door, and the fully curtain-covered windows the new fine dining restaurant “The Noname” in Mitte certainly sets out to provoke some curiosity. When entering through its ceiling-high white curtains it feels a lot like unveiling a well-kept secret – one that is sitting right in front of your eyes on the busy Oranienburger Straße at the front of the Heckmannhöfe.

The plissee-covered walls, luxurious crown molding, antique bar, and chandeliers set the stage for a highlight that juxtaposes the aforementioned interior: A mural of a woman tied up in bondage ropes that extend into the room in an installation of actual ropes. It’s a daring image for a fine dining restaurant with an expected upscale audience – but one that is quite fitting both for the neighborhood and Berlin’s general tendency for kinkiness.

But the kinkiness doesn’t end there as the food that follows will certainly deliver more than one climax to your palate. Being surrounded by high-caliber fine dining food critics on my first visit I feel slightly self-conscious about my own amazement of this culinary feast. But once they all chime in with praise of each dish I feel more confident: This might very well be the most interesting, surprising and stimulating food experience I’ve had in a long time.

Every single of the 8 courses is a highlight, both visually as well as tastewise. Restaurant chef David Kikillus is not a Michelin-star-awarded chef for no reason. Brace yourselves for cannelloni, macarons, oysters, langostino, dove, tartar, merengue, and ice cream – but all in ways you will most likely never have experienced before. Surprising stand-outs to me are the camomille merengue with tarragon sorbet. It sounds like nothing you would ever come up with, but the taste is an experience of its own.

Apart from the main menu also the surrounding details are incredible, like the sourdough bread and the alcohol-free accompanying drink menu (an option to the also impeccable wine accompaniment by Sommelier Steve Hartzsch). Even the visit to the restroom will feel more like going to a hip urban art gallery.

After experiencing all these fantastic culinary experiments you might very well be as lost for words as I was at first – very fittingly the place is called Noname. But once the bondage lady at the wall starts to make her little show one word will certainly come to mind: wow.
