You just know, when Joseph’s in the room. The soon-to-be 28-year-old’s personality is as immersive as his imagery. The Berlin Wunderkind has left his mark on the big city – now, after almost a decade, he’s ready to leave her behind…
His cheeky charm and exceptional talent led Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert into the forefront of a new generation of Berlin creatives. The last eight years have seen him working as a portrait photographer for established publications such as Intro, Siegessaeule and Gay Times capturing the rare place where beauty, intimacy, and refined aesthetic meet like no other. His first, much-acclaimed photobook ‘Gender as a Spectrum’ – a collaboration with Kaey – was released in 2016, and hit the bull’s eye of a zeitgeist of sexual liberation and social acceptance for LGBTQIA+ people. At the time, Joseph was studying at the renowned University of the Arts Berlin, after already graduating from Ostkreuz School for Photography, and, on top, he opened up his own gallery ‘P7’ in 2017.

Earlier this year a unique exhibition called Unseen Westeros took place in Berlin dedicated to the world of Games of Thrones. Forty artists from the art departments of the iconic series had been working together for three years to present you something special.
Being big fans of Games of Thrones, we could not miss the chance to get in touch with the organizers. That’s why we decided to interview Philipp Scherer, who is not only one of the creative minds behind this amazing exhibition but also one of the concept artists who has been working for almost all seasons of Game of Thrones. As iHeartBerlin grows and spreads its metaphorical wings to encompass more platforms, we are delighted to present you with the iHeartBerlin Show, our new online video show where we’ll have the chance to talk all about Berlin with prominent figures of this amazing city.
And our project couldn’t have started stronger, as the first episode hosts the magnificent Daniel-Ryan Spaulding, the Canadian standup comedian who became viral through his series “It’s Berlin!” where he satirizes Berlin’s techno and hipster culture in a way we all find relatable.
Our excitement to have him was big, and we didn’t miss the opportunity to ask him as many things as possible: what inspires him, his favorite spots in Berlin, how his sexuality connects to his comedy, and lots more.

When I was little, I thought that all things in life needed to follow a given structure. Like the mail that goes through the postal system, or like my big sister following her daily schedule for school. Similar to Pacman we move within a certain frame from A to B, as quickly and efficiently as trains on railroad tracks, with those few stops along the way, where we can either get off and change trains or just carry on till the end. It’s safe, I learned. It’s comfortable. It seemed like this is simply how things in life function as well as how we grow and evolve. We go to kindergarten, preschool, high school, university and start working to build a career, which asks for commitment and endurance. So, people in their 20s like me, who have been following these sort of systems all their lives, are slowly starting to lose stamina; Wait, what was this dream again I used to follow…?
The options, what to make of yourself and your life, are endless. The stories of people who have dared to go off the grid, are all over the internet. Are we still having this one dream, or is the dream now to squeeze as many achievements under our belt as possible? Is there still that one position you still dream of working in or has it become many or even none?

As we are aware of this, we wanna introduce an exhibition to you that is definitely worth a visit. Volume A will take place from the 3rd to the 5th of November in Colonia Nova, and has acclaimed contributing artists, such as Erwin Olaf and Bruce LaBruce. The question is not, what is Aérea Negrot doing, it’s more: What is she NOT doing? The Venezuelan-born, Berlin-based artistic all-rounder works in every art form that comes to mind: She sings, performs, produces, DJs… She became internationally known for her collaboration with the dance floor superpower of “Hercules and Love Affair”, but only referencing this stage of career would limit her art. Her eclecticism jumps from pure energy behind the decks, over a love for experimental productions, to a voice filling a concert hall with every tone from a high falsetto to a roaring baritone. We still remember her mesmerizing avant-garde performance at Volksbühne.
