Photography Street Art by Florian Kolmer

Kolmer_thestreets-6

Of course there is the photography of street art. But is there really that much street art that uses photography? Not that I can think of, most of it is painted, stenciled and drawn. So it looks like what fashion photographer Florian Kolmer has been doing in the streets of Berlin is pretty new, at least to me. He’s created a very elegant series of black and white photos, printed them in large format and postered them onto the walls in public spaces, like next to the King Size bar or onto the Berghain. Enjoy the photo series of his work after the jump.

The Low Bros from Berlin

It’s always fun to see Berlin-based streetartists being acclaimed  in international  street art blogs. The Low Bros are somehow really getting popular out there which is amazing – but I have the feeling that the Berliners don’t really know them that much. The urban art team Low Bros consists of the two brothers Qbrk and Nerd, born in Hamburg. They’re currently based in Hamburg and Berlin. When they where children the two brothers loved to draw and invented their own little stories and fantasy worlds while playing in the backyard or being in the countryside. You’ll still find both influences, urbanity and nature,  in their work today. I love their space/cubistic fox art and I see it everyday on my way out. You can see their work at the charackter walk from the Pictoplasma Festival. Enjoy some pics of their art after the jump.

Hear us ROA

I have more passion for illustrated and sophisticated street art then for graffiti or more simple symbolic pieces from the likes of Banksy & co. One artist I have observed for a while now is ROA. He magically turns animals inside out. In a brutal yet aesthetic kind of way. To see some of his work you can visit the Skalitzers Contemporary Art Gallery. Their current exhibition is an annual showcase, that includes the work of ROA, as well as some other gallery artists. More pictures of the exhibition and all the information you need after the jump.

The holy Gould

all art work: Gould

Sometimes I find Berlin absolutely amazing. Because the city gives people a chance. People who have a talent can show it here. Last year in summer I was at the graduation show of the Kunthochschule Weissensee and was allowed to let myself be inspired by a young artist named Gould and his exhibited series St. Nimmerlein. Six months later, the series hangs together with popular German artists at the Soho House Berlin. Until April 1 24, four of the saint prints are on display alongside works by Jaybo Monk, Christian Awe and Marco “PHO ” Grassi. The exhibition is called The Urban Artist and was organized by the Circle Culture Gallery. When I was there at the opening I had to admit: Gould stands out not just between his fellow students. The well-known artists should keep an eye on this newcomer. His saints reflect current problems based on the iconic painting of the Byzantine era. For me, a very successful and sophisticated artistic criticism of the system. More holy representations and contacts after the jump.

Update: The Exhibition continues until April 24th.

A boy with a brezel instead of his hands

Artistic discrimination is a very special kind of evil. For sure Hr. v. Bias’ approachs on disrespecting the Bavarian people in Berlin is not exactly political correct – but it is funny as hell. Hr.v. Bias is one of the coolest street artist we have here in Berlin and even if his blue monsters are not everyone’s cup of tea, I have always a lot of fun discovering something new from him around the city. More street art from him after the jump.

The Streetart Canteen

dsc_0255_001

photo: Wolfgang Brückner

Inside the vibrant Wrangelkiez a new restaurant called Eckstück opened recently. Its walls are covered by artwork of Berlin’s countless street artists. Even if some of the graffiti work does not reflect my taste, the work of Pabo and Hr. v. Bias is really beautiful. The menu consist mainly of pizza and the atmosphere has something of a student canteen. For all fans of street art the visit of Eckstück provides a good overview of the styles of many Berlin-based street artists. More pictures and the address, after the jump.

The Anti-Fashion Week: Princess Hijab

img091122082359_p

Street artists who jump through the night to take their revenge on society have always had something romantic for me. That’s also why I am a big fan of the following ad-busting artist: Princess Hijab loves to put some nasty black paint over the pretty western faces of Parisian ads. Putting the face behind a painted veil should definitely demonstrate that the discussion between western and oriental believes about culture are not getting to a right result. Even if I am not so sure what kind of message Princess Hijab actually has on her mind with her art, I love the way she takes my attention and makes me think. For a more traditional approach you might perhaps check out the Veil-Fashion-Blog (no kidding). More pics of the ad busting work of Princess Hijab after the jump.
