In the early 80s Katharine Hamnett has been a fashion icon with her oversized T-shirts with block letter slogans like FRANKIE SAY RELAX or CHOOSE LIFE. Later in her career the English designer gained attention with some more political slogans like NO WAR BLAIR OUT or PEACE. She also began protesting against the unscrupulous practices of the textile industry by relaunching her collections under strict ethical guidelines. In the beginning of 2008 she participated in the Fashion Against Aids campaign by H&M with the slogan shirt USE A CONDOM. For the summer season of 2008 she released a collection of reproductions of some of her most prominent slogan shirts and hoodies, as well as some new prints. More images and infos after the jump.
During the London Fashion Week in 2008 Hamnett complained about the racism of fashion designers. “The catwalks are full of white dogs, cosmetic companies don’t like black models – the racist bitches. I have no idea why when it’s obvious that black girls are just so genuinely much more beautiful than Caucasians, who have clearly got the short straw. Black girls have much better body shapes and it’s such a shame. I just think there should be a bit more of a balance.”
