The City of Leisure

Not so long ago, I was thinking about all the freelancers sitting in the sun with their slim macbooks and enjoying the spring arrival. But yesterday I had an experience that made me think that perhaps I am wrong assuming that all happy people in Berlin must be freelancers. More of my Monday afternoon thoughts after the jump.

Yesterday evening I had dinner with friends at the casual average Friedrichshain restaurant. The waiter was a quite handsome boy who seemed somehow familiar. But I thought that this is probably the curse of all pretty faces. If you know a certain amount of them, they all look the same. But giving us the bill the guy approached me and asked me if we had met before. After brainstorming for a while (he had wondered if I worked at some kind of shop! Hello, do I look like sales personnel?! I hope not…) we realized that we worked at the same agency and in the same office for a couple of month. He worked there as a freelance project manager and I was really curious to ask, why he gave up this career for being a waiter. His explanation was simple but plausible. Now he has much more free time as before. Being a freelancer and working full time is so much more work because you never stop thinking about something that can perhaps go wrong and how to get the next job. So he simply called the office and said that he will not come any more.

I feel like this kind of story is so Berlin. In this city nothing is more precious then free time. Nobody needs to work off his butt like in Paris or London to have a normal live. You could be a waiter in the evening and simply enjoy your day. I just wish I would be less ambitious with my live and follow this strategy. I should talk about this in my next therapy session with me, myself and I.

The picture I choose to this article show the sculptural work of Giancarlo Neri called the writer.
