“Gay-friendly” Ad-Busting
Horror and disbelief on Sunday evening on facebook!
Yeah, we gave Merkel a second term! What seemed to be fun last week at Picknick (throwing around an FDP sponge, picture below), just became reality. The Tigerente, a popular German toy, is about to come in form of a black and yellow coalition.
I didn’t want to write about the elections, but some people were left highly surprised, even appalled, after the first results were published. My first thought was: What did you expect?? But to be honest, actually prepared for anything, I was a bit shocked, too. More after the jump.
But what exactly was it, that shocked the young and trendy facebook people? The FDP’s good result? Or the SPD’s vote loss? I can’t tell exactly. To me, it’s been both, I guess.
The grand coalition with the SPD is history, we are now expecting a centre-right government with the christian CDU, its Bavarian sister party, the CSU and the FDP, you may like it or not. Same same as in 1949 and 1982. The liberal FDP gained nearly 5% points and had the best result of its history. Guido Westerwelle is expected to become Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor. The big loser of the election was the SPD which received its worst result ever in a federal election.
Whereas the small-business-friendly FDP preaches lower taxes, less regulation and friendliness to private enterprise, the CDU is as traditional as it used to be. Although it is not to deny that Germany is an “Integrationsland”, the CDU’s election programme rules out dual citizenship and calls for deporting foreign criminals. Not to speak of those unbearable statements of the CDU high profile member Jürgen Rüttgers.
A program none of the Berlin party crowd would possibly support, one might assume.
But during the last weeks I had to learn, that the Berlin hipster crowd is much more conservative than I ever expected. I have met many people who “admitted” that they are going to vote for the CDU. Young people, those with a “migrant” background as well, gays, let’s say a wide variety of people representing the trendy side of Berlin. Most of the people I have spoken to, didn’t even make it to the election. They either missed to send a letter or just forgot to vote in view of the good weather on Sunday.
But to those of you who are standing a bit more left, I have good news: don’t say, there is no improvement. A female chancellor and a gay foreign minister, just think about it…
