One of the most beautiful moments at this year’s Nation of Gondwana was the performance by Viperflo at the small beach. After a long and cold night he began his set just when the sun was rising. It was just the perfect music at the right place at the right time.
In our interview with Viperflo we have talked about music by Lykke Li, Grimes, Yazoo, Super Flu, Bibio and Connan Mockasin. More after the click.
Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix)
When I read the title, I was looking forward to hearing it, but I did not know this particular remix. May I be honest? I am asking myself: What have they done to this beautiful song? I am a big fan of Lykke Li, and I also like this song – but I much prefer David Sitek’s version.
Grimes – Genesis
Grimes have done some great things. In the beginning, when the rhythm started, I thought that this could be interesting, even though it has something dark to it. But then there is this cheap synthie, which kills the whole atmosphere. And this angel-like vocals really do not make it any better. At least I enjoy the chorus (at minute 1 or so), which has a nice beat. But the strange melody that comes right after it destroys that moment…
After all it as a somehow inconsistent song with moments of extreme kitsch. I had hoped that I would find a decent remix of it that would play with the little highlight of this song, but there is only a strange dubstep version. So, please, dear remixers: Go for it! Take this song, so that this good lady has not breathed in the microphone for nothing.
Yazoo – Only You
Ah – that’s awesome! Uiuiui… That brings up some childhood memories. I see myself as a little child in the sitting corner of my parent’s kitchen, in front of an anologue radio by Grundig, and there are these walls painted in ocre and orange curtains with flower patterns. Beautiful song. Thank you for this travel through time!
Super Flu – Super Flu Loves Isaac
I did not recognize the song instantly (my memory is not that good), and I liked the beat in the beginning. But when the melody came, I suddenly realized what it is.
I use remixes a lot and I do not reject this entirely, but I do not like listening to these edits and remixes of old songs any more. All that started at about half a year ago. And this is not a really original example…
Bibio – Lovers Carvings (Oscar edit)
Again, I first enjoyed it, but in the beginning I was wondering why this song sounds so strange. But at least since this loop break (or however you call what is happening after the first minute) came, I could not deal with this version any more. Not everything should be remixed, especially when there already is a perfect mix – which in this case is the Cats n Dogz remix.
Connan Mockasin – Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan Rework)
I went with two female friends of mine to the Nation of Gondwana, and I once again forgot to bring some music for the way. But one of my friends had a groove CD I did not know that was a real treasure.
I did not like the last song of it at first, and I did not appreciate it enough. When I was back home again, I listened to it again, and since then I listen to it nonstop, it has really burnt in my ear canal. Thank you, Elisa!
