The idea of the beard goes back to its origin. In fact beards are one of the very few external distinguishing marks that show the basic features of us humans. I myself wear my beard convincingly because it simply is a part of me since I travelled to Peru five years ago growing my beard longer and longer. That’s when I became the „alemán con barba“ , the bearded German, who collected sun energy in the old Inca sites.
The last two years I spent in Spain devoting myself to studies in fisheries. Contrary to the stereotypical image, most fishermen do not have beards today or allow no more than a three-day-stubble. Instead I noticed that the participating scientists agonizing over fishery were actually growing a beard over that matter. Therefore the only bearded fisherman was a scientist, who at the same time collected and collated data with his catch.
Nevertheless, I felt in good hands.
Of course there is this romanticized image of an old fisherman sitting at the harbor, smoking his pipe without any hurry. Moreover, the beard of a fisherman is a symbol for the war against and at the same time strong bond with nature. Furthermore, during long fishing trips an efficient appearance of especially captains is important for their assertiveness on board – and not to forget the enchanting of mermaids. Besides, beards for me seem to show experience and knowledge.
Evidently, I have to admit that the Spanish beard culture has a very limited niche role being outshone by the Italian beard scene however. When I finally returned to Berlin I noticed that the numerous emigrated Spaniards and Italians correspond exactly to that observation.
On the photos one could get the impression that I got entangled in the net. Somehow I really did, feeling a close bond to fishery. In the meantime I work in fisheries management – my beard stays with me.
