Strange Magic – The Theater Festival of Sophiensaele

Maybe you have already heard about the literature contest we launched together with the Sophiensaele theater. The reason we ventured in this new editorial direction is the upcoming international theater festival Strange Magic that will start tomorrow. We are really much looking forward to it not just because our first printed booklet comes out of the press and will be presented during the festival but also because there will be so much interesting theater and perfomances going on. The overall topic is the magical and illusionary in theater. How can stage magic be combined with performance know how? Visibility vs. invisibility, knowledge and power, illusions and disillusions are the focus and point to the current social debate: who is manipulating and fooling whom? In my opinion very interesting questions, which will be hopefully answered in part by the presented pieces. But if you can’t visit the festival, you can still follow our Strange Magic of Berlin stories which we will publish, one by one here on the blog. My recommendations for the individual perfomances after the jump.

The whole festival start with the Magic Lounge as an introduction to the several pieces which should not be missed and are free of entrance. Also if you like to dance in a completely different atmosphere the magic club which will hit the theater on Saturday the 23 of November will be something to look forward to it. Look at the pictures of the last party we attended at Sophiensaele to get an impression.

I have always had a hard time in recommending theater pieces before I have seen them, but I guess that the pieces of Monster Truck never disapointed the audience in several ways.

Also if you want to see something completely different and somehow illogical and magical  you should see Tonights,  lights out! by David Weber-Krebs. What happens if everybody from the audience has the power to control one light bulb?

Last but not least, check out Spirit by Florentine Holzinger and Vincent Riebek. Both are just recently graduated young and talented performers and should not go unnoticed.
