On Friday I made my very first visit to the IFA at Messe Berlin, one of the biggest fairs for consumer electronics. I’m not a the biggest nerd when it comes to technology and gadgets. Of course for my work I need a laptop, camera and a smartphone. But that’s pretty much it, I don’t even have a TV. So before I stepped into the Messe Berlin halls I imagined the whole affair to be like and out-of-control visit to Mediamarkt. But little did I know what I was getting myself into. This turned out to be a quite immersive experience of an almost overwhelming magnitude.
If you haven’t been yourself you can imagine it pretty much as the biggest consumer electronics store in the world but with all the technology from tomorrow. The majority of the brands that present here do it in the style of a fancy boutique where you can simply touch and try out their products. Some brand presentation have quite stunning designs. But a few brands go a step further than just design and create whole worlds around their products.
One of the biggest and most elaborate presentations of this nature was the area of the Telekom. They recreated all the parts of the daily lifestyle where you make use of the technologies they provide. Surrounded by a huge panorama animation that was projected by 48 beamers onto a 3dimensionally sculptured surface you could find a living room setting with a home cinema, an office space with interactive screens, a play area with a kicker table, an entertainment area with Spotify music players, a store area that had all the latest smartphones and tablets and a printing workshop where you could tweet yourself your own slogan shirt. In the center of it all is a huge stage where the host a daily program of shows, games and live music from upcoming music acts such as the Honeymoonshaker, Cassandra Steen and Lary. Obviously this presentation is about much more than your internet and phone provider. This is about the next level of technological lifestyle.
The possibilites to play around and immerse into the new technology are sheer endless at IFA and it will take you an entire day to work through this (luckily they have food booths at every corner and sometimes even free fresh cooking at some booths). If you wanna dive into it you still have the chance until September 10th 2014. Definately check out the live music program of the Telekom area in hall 4.2. Have fun!
