Lights On In Berlin – 20 Years of eBay

This Thursday evening, September 10, as it’s getting darker outside with the end of summer the Spree will be transformed into a light landscape. Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter will illuminate buildings along the Spree between Berlin Hauptbahnhof and East Side Gallery as part of eBay‘s 20 year anniversary celebrations. Internationally renown, the investment banker turned marketing consultant and artist has been transforming public buildings, monuments as well as landscapes and whole mountains since 1999, and actually this is the second time in Berlin for Hofstetter as he illuminated the Brandenburger Tor in 2005. See more examples and read more about the upcoming installation after the jump. Hofstetter has been collaborating with the United Nations Human Right Council, banks and other organizations alike and the projects have been varied in scope from raising awareness for socio environmental issues to celebration and entertainment. For example he projected the Titanic in real size onto a massive iceberg in Antarctica in 2012. And to celebrate the centenary of the Jungfrau Bahn in Switzerland the team illuminated the Jungfrau mountain for two weeks camping out in the mountains at -25 degrees Celsius.

When asked how he got into light art as opposed to painting and sculpture the answer is simple: out of consideration for the environment. Light is clean, silent and hence has little impact on the environment, and at the same time it offers great flexibility and customization and as you can see a memorable experience.

We are looking forward to seeing how the artist will be linking eBay, the most vibrant marketplace for discovering great value and unique selection, and the buildings together with his projections. Back in 1995 eBay the first product that was sold was a broken laser pointer for $14,83 and today eBay has about 800 million articles for sale, so you can be sure that there are a lot of stories to be told for the 20th anniversary. This Thursday, the light installation will start at 20h and go until around 22h. Strolling along the Spree from Hauptbahnhof to East Side Gallery will take you about an hour depending on your speed of walking and gives you plenty of time to admire the beautiful light installations. Or maybe you’ll just take your bike before it gets too chilly in the evening.
