Discovering the 5 Elements of Chinese Cuisine in Berlin

Some people need to travel far to make different memories all over the world. I sometimes just need to travel inside the inner ring of  Berlin to collect the same amount of crazy experiences somebody could get from a trip to another continent. And there is a simple reason for that: the Berlin inhabitants are a bunch of curious people, traveling the world and exploring different cultures and bringing their findings back to our city to share it with the other Berliners.

To make an example: I have never been to China and still I got the chance to discover the variety and sophistication of Chinese cuisine right in the middle of Berlin. This happened more by coincidence than by choice. My friend Jacob Schickler who used to live in China for many years started a pop-up restaurant called That Woo together with Yuhang Wu, originally from China but professionally trained chef as a Chef in Germany.

The special concept of That Woo is to offer a unique five-course tasting menu highlighting authentic Chinese flavors with modern experimental preparation and local ingredients. On top of that, this dinner comes with a great storytelling. Each course relates to one of the five Chinese elements: Earth, Water, Gold, Fire and Wood.

When I had the chance to experience That Woo I was surprised about the different flavor explosions in just one dinner and how the presentation and the combination of the individual courses were done with so much love and attention to detail.

To make this experience even more authentic That Woo offers a variety of delicious Baijiu cocktails to pair with your food. Baijiu is a clear grain traditional Chinese spirit made from either rice or sorghum and I can assure you that it will give you a nice warm feeling without knocking you out the day after like vodka or other strong alcoholic beverages do. The cocktails are exclusively mixed by Capital Spirits, a unique Baijiu Bar in Bejing.

This weekend, on July 2nd, 2017, That Woo will be popping up again at the beautiful Dottir. You can read more about the menu and the prices on their Facebook event and don’t forget to make a reservation beforehand.
