We all know the beauty of a good book. The luxury of indulging in the written word is incomparable. We might have told you about the books about Berlin. Now it’s time to shed light on where to best get them.

There are over 285 book shops in Berlin, each one of them with their own beauty. Some are small, some are bigger, all of them are good. A few of them have such a special atmosphere though, which is worth listing. See 12 of our favorite book shops of the capital after the jump.

Einar & Bert Theaterbuchhandlung

It seems as if there is a book store for every need. Einar & Bert (no, not Ernie and Bert) gets its name from theater icons Einar Schleef and Bertolt Brecht and is Germany’s first theater book shop. In different sections from children’s theater to operas, the theater lover and book enthusiast can get anything revolving around the big stage. Also, you can have yourself a nice cup of coffee while searching for the perfect book.

Saint George’s

This one is for all the English-lovers! Saint George’s is a small and cute bookshop that specializes in English literature, e.g. lyric poetry. Once a month, readers and undercover-poets can recite their own prose and poetry at “Speak Easy!” Most of the books are used here and if a finished book returns, the price drops.

Bücherbogen Savignyplatz

Considering the unique location, the Bücherbogen Savignyplatz is special. It is also special because of its wide-ranging selection of good film books, architecture reads and photography literature. Shop a good book in an exceptional atmosphere right at Savignyplatz under the S-Bahn.

Shakespeare & Sons

Books & bagels could be the best combination ever. Both of which you can get at Shakespeare & Sons, where allegedly Shakespeare’s sons themselves sell secondhand and brand new books. Ok, we’re not sure about the last statement. We are sure though that there is a wide range of German, English and French books displayed in a nice atmosphere, accompanied with a good bagel.

Do you read me?!

In this well sorted and widely stocked book shop in Mitte, you will find over 1000 magazines and contemporary literature. Do you read me?! is not only an unusual book store but also an exceptional place to read in, with its own reading room.

Buchkantine

As we’ve mentioned before, the Buchkantine is not only the perfect spot to have a good breakfast. In addition to being a bistro, it is a bookshop where you can buy your books to read along with your coffee and croissant.

Topics Berlin

Topics Berlin is one of the newer additions to Weserstraße. The English bookstore organizes its literature by self-assigned categories, some of which are hilariously offbeat. In addition to selling books, they also run their own publishing house and often host readings and talks.

Motto

Motto has a motto. With its dedication to books, magazines and artists publications the store in the backyard at Schlesisches Tor has a profile and not only that – it has many beautiful books in a lovely atmosphere. Several exhibitions are also taking place over the year.

This is a paradise for both magazine and interior-design lovers. The fairly new soda. books in Mitte has any magazine you could possibly look for and a great selection of unique books. And the way they display them is the best way to find them – organized and stylish.

Ocelot

“Not just another bookstore” is the slogan of Ocelot. And it fits. In a nice and warm atmosphere where reading enthusiasts can feast on world literature and have a nice coffee while doing that.

Pequod Books is a gem in the midst of Neukölln. It’s a secondhand bookshop that specializes in international literature. From Hebrew to Swedish – Pequod has books in over 15 languages and we’re sure you will find yours too.

This one is a German-Polish bookshop with a cozy reading area and countless literary gems in both Polish and German. Buch bund is a niche that hasn’t been filled out before, weirdly. This bookstore is definitely worth a visit.
