Dirty Debüt – S2#5 pain killer

Dirty Debüt – S2#5 pain killer

Presented works:
»Pliable« (Djibril Sall)

»NudE NuNs w/BiG GuNs« (Nastja Antonenko, Josephin Hanke, Lucky Hole, Bo Thomas, Laurean Wagner)

»cut me glass | you’re so fucking peinlich« (Fjóla Gautadóttir, Suvi Kemppainen)

»The past« (Else Tunemyr, Liina Magnea)

In 2020, Dirty Debut comes to Ballhaus Ost and continues a four-part series of events that promotes the debut presentation of sketchy, unfinished, in short: dirty performances. Dirty Debut is not only about increasing the visibility of emerging performance artists; it also wants to bring together the entire spectrum of the performance landscape on the same stage. Each evening, four 20-minute performances will be performed. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to toast the artists* and their work at a joint dinner.
Interested emerging artists apply with a project draft of max. 2000 characters and their curriculum vitae. The application condition is that they are at the starting point of an artistic practice, which should not exceed one professionally prepared production. Further developments of university theses are welcome, but no student project proposals.
A jury will select four drafts from all applications, whose artistic approach and qualitative claim will be judged to be independent and promising. The invited performance makers* will receive a small budget for production, minimal stage design, materials and transportation.

Running time: approx. 3:00 hours with 2 intermissions and a joint dinner.
In English.

Concept, artistic direction: Björn Pätz, Sandra Umathum Dramaturgy: Maxi Wallenhorst, Joshua Wicke

A production by Björn Pätz and Sandra Umathum in cooperation with Ballhaus Ost. Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

The Pornceptual Effect

The Pornceptual Effect

photos: Chris Phillips for Pornceptual

Pornceptual – “That’s a party? With that kinda name? In Berlin? – Oh Gosh!” – I know plenty of people who would already pass just knowing these banal facts; driven by an opinion, formed by nothing more but hearsay. Fetish, leather, sex, queers, techno, darkness; the associations are clear. I, on the other hand, seem to be constantly driven by an insatiable fascination for everything that’s outrageous. So, I went, more spontaneous, than elaborately planned. Well, I got everything mentioned above – yet still, my first Pornceptual was far from what I expected. One night in between naked skin, electronic beats and sexual liberation made me philosophize about what’s queer, what’s compliant and that weird thing called “normal”.

“And what piece of clothing are you gonna take off today?”, the skinny bouncer asked, a crooked smile on his face. His outfit consisted of an old Soviet uniform – without anything down below, of course, just tight leather hot pants. I looked around; the line behind me appeared like a collection of bizarre characters. I already felt very entertained by this; Berlin, just like you’d imagine it. Admittedly, at first I had to realize that I was not truly a newbie to this world. I am queer, I have been to many queer parties – but a party that is this kinky and sex oriented was still on the to-do-list. The facial expression of one of my friends reminded me of how deeply this Berlin party scene has already influenced me. While I was showing a broad smile, her face said something like: “What the fuck am I getting myself into?”

Berlin from Above: The Best Viewpoints of the City

Berlin from Above: The Best Viewpoints of the City

Berlin’s beauty is in the details. Yes, despite being a very popular city, it is not exactly known for, let’s say, the typical understanding of beauty. People like this city for more subtle reasons. But we think it’s also a matter of perspective. When you take a few steps back and look at it from a distance – more specifically from above – you see the city in a whole new way. Things that you normally only realize when you spend more time here become very obvious: How green the city is, the massive parks that function as green lungs of the city. How low the city was built, almost devoid of sky scrapers that mostly give cities with skylines a very generic look. From the distance you will see the more iconic constructions of the city and how much they stand-out, details that every other big city would simply swallow in a jungle of concrete.

We should look at Berlin from a bird’s eye view way more often and appreciate this different kind of beauty! To give you an overview of where you can get this perspective, we selected our favorite high viewpoints for you. A little shout-out to some of our Instagrammers from our #berlin exhibition who made a big portion of the photos after the jump.

How it Felt to Move to Berlin in 1992

How it Felt to Move to Berlin in 1992

Rosenthaler Platz, 1999. photo: Michael Lange

The magic about Berlin are not only the rare moments of strange intimacy with strangers or the delicate observations of your surroundings but also the turbulent past this city has gone through. The next strange magic story is somehow a biography with a magical atmosphere by the american Berlin lover Jeff Talton.

Jeff Tarlton has been a denizen of the Berlin music community since re-locating from his home town of Detroit back in 1992. He fell in initially with the Eastern European shamanic music scene. He has put his distinctive stamp either singing or playing guitar as a session musician or featured collaborator, on essential Berlin music labels such as CitySlang, Kitty-Yo and Monica Enterprises, as well as having his own compositions find their way into theatre and film. Indeed, during his more than 20 years in Berlin, Jeff has organized and/or performed at countless local events under his own name & aliases from Columbia Fritz to the most intimate off-the-grid experiments in outer suburbs. As 2013 winds down Jeff is preparing his next live presentation Treason Of The Glitch as well as composing music/sound design for a major German art film due next year. Read his story after the jump.
