The Mysterious New Street Art Characters in Berlin

The Mysterious New Street Art Characters in Berlin

Have you noticed anything new on the city’s walls recently? While strolling around Berlin, we keep bumping into these mysterious, eyeless ladies and gentlemen, giving us the sense of being spied on and maybe judged at the same time, for not looking as cool as them.

We couldn’t help but wonder who scatters these stylish figures around different corners of the city. Doing our little research, we found the art duo who spreads the acrylic love around, Kam and Laurene, who live between Paris and Berlin. Other than their street art, the duo paints on canvas and takes part in  exhibitions with their work, as well as collaborations with brands like the Pioc and Akasha. For more of these pretty figures, follow their work through their Instagram account.

The Captivating Street Art Murals of Teufelsberg

The Captivating Street Art Murals of Teufelsberg

Teufelsberg was one of the first places I discovered upon arriving in Berlin, because I used to live really close (yes, I lived in Heerstrasse. Yes, people live in Heerstrasse). It is a green, beautiful hill one can choose to go hiking, cycling, and if you’re a lazy potato like me, just to chill on top and enjoy the amazing view. Getting its name from the lake nearby, Teufelssee, Teufelsberg is a man-made hill, created out of the rubble and debris the WWII left behind. It also covers the never completed Nazi military technical college, which after the War, was easier to bury than demolish (literally, the devil’s mountain). Its fascinating history doesn’t stop there, since during the Cold War  it was used by Americans as a Listening Station to spy over the DDR.

Meet the Dog that Loves Berlin Street Art

Meet the Dog that Loves Berlin Street Art

photos: Breeze the Bulldog

Although Berlin is home to many Instagrammers ranging from fashion people to architecture lovers it’s been a while since I saw an account that would be so disarmingly cute and embracing the Berlin spirit at the same time. Breeze the Bulldog is an adorable little white doggie with a black patch on his eye and apparently lots of patience to be photographed with various examples of the Berlin street art. Check out some photos after the jump!

A History of Street Art and Graffiti in Berlin

A History of Street Art and Graffiti in Berlin

photospeedpropertybuyers.co.ukCC

Graffitis are a poetic creation of the streets and with this in mind I invite you to take a closer look at your surroundings; maybe there’s a hidden message waiting to be discovered or an image to be admired.

Although subjective, when we think of graffiti and street art, we often come to think of abstractness, disorganization, aesthetics, movement, freedom and creativity and whether to make us laugh or to incite us to riot, the colorful scribbles, which tend to be innovative and original, are the guiding thread that leads to self-expression while stimulating body and mind. However, it’s not only about the aesthetics since their most important feature is actually connected with the reactions they get; in other words, it has to do with provocation. And Art needs provocation, often associated with originality, to be consequently educational – Art does not rest exclusively on moralizing concepts, but it is above all a container of criticism and reflection. And Berlin, as a magnet drawing artists from all over the world, is the perfect example to illustrate the concept of “provocative Art”.

Street Art in Berlin: The Interaction of Murals

Street Art in Berlin: The Interaction of Murals

photos: alexberlinetta

Street art is alive and kicking in Berlin; what better proof for this ongoing development than the several new murals scattered all over the city? The best part is that you are most likely to discover a new one, every time you take a different path on your way to work, home, etc.; and while you are walking down the street immersed in and overwhelmed by your worries, you lift your head and there you see one: colorful or in black-white, depicting figures or people, they are always striking; as if they have the power to grab you from the pool of thoughts you so gladly swim in, and show you a different world, much more refreshing and easy-going. On the pictures below you can see people (inter)acting with the murals consciously and unconsciously. It is truly remarkable how present they are in our everyday life and how they can have an impact on our mood so easily.

The new Selfie Street Art Mural in Berlin

The new Selfie Street Art Mural in Berlin

Once again the big open air gallery that is Berlin welcomes a new artwork into their exhibition: We have a new street art mural in town and this one is pretty special: It’s a selfie mural that has a big silhouette-shaped gap in the design for people to step in front of to take a photo and become part of the artwork. You only have to find the selfie-spot that is marked on the street in front of the mural which puts you in the perfect distance and perspective to seamlessly integrate into the artwork. Pretty fun!

The mural that is located at Mühlenstraße 5 across from the iconic Oberbaumbrücke was designed by the artists Dee Dee Kid, Gogo Plata, Dejoe and the Dixons and it’s part of a project called #WALLSofWIR by Jägermeister. In total there will be four amazing murals in four cities, each created by a small group of local artists. The ones in Hamburg and Berlin are already up, in Stuttgart and Cologne are coming in the next weeks. Get a little impression of the Berlin one after the jump.

Barbara. at Boxi – Streetart Notes Against Racism

Barbara. at Boxi – Streetart Notes Against Racism

I have to start this article with saying that I was super excited today. A friend wrote me on Facebook saying that my favorite street art poet Barbara. created a little exhibition of over 100 of her street art pieces exactly at my doorstep, at Boxhagener Platz. Since I have been living in Friedrichshain for 12 years it never happened that something that I am passionate about happens so close to my home. Just for this I am deeply grateful to Barbara.

For all of you who do not know Barbara., her exhibition “Das Kleben is schön” is the perfect occasion to get to know her funny, sad, poetic art that interferes with public places on a different level that you might know from traditional street art. The impact of Barbara.‘s work is not limited to the urban spaces where her little notes and jokes might disappear after a short while. Her fame began when her art went viral on the internet. Last year the refugees crisis and the neo-right-wing movement in Europe created a lot of controversy which made me really sad on a personal level.  But seeing the little art pieces of Barbara. shared by thousands everyday on Facebook and on Instagram always made me believe in a world where there will always be people opposing a narrow minded and racist society.

If any one should get a price for keeping the morals high in the last year of political change it should be Barbara. Her smart criticism and wit always embrace humor and lightness, but at the same time they point the finger directly where the shit is stinking. Don’t miss the exhibition that is hanging around Boxhagener Platz since yesterday. So far I everybody I saw was  very respectful with the notes hanging around the square, not taking down anything. But let’s not be too optimistic. It’s Berlin in the end right? If you can’t come by you can check out my best of in the pictures after the jump.

A Street Art Scavenger Hunt

A Street Art Scavenger Hunt

Recently Berlin-based artist duo Various & Gould have revealed a street art scavenger hunt as part of the Backjumps exhibition opening at Kunstraum Bethanien. We absolutely love this idea, combining art with an interactive game and making it an experience that goes beyond the traditional gallery visit. What the artists have prepared for this hunt is an illustrated version of a short story by Polina Soloveichik that has been divided in 6 parts that are being spread out along a route in Kreuzberg. With each illustration you will also find a part of the story (in German, but with a QR code you will be able to get a translation in English on your smartphone). It’s about three construction workers named Maik, Paul and Jörg and the secret about some abandoned construction sites. The works will were revealed in conjunction with the opening of Backjumps. You can get more details on the Various & Gould website. With the hashtag #PublicTale photos and comments about the project can be tracked on Twitter and Instagram. After the jump you can see photos of the street art pieces.
