What Bar Type are you? – A Bar & Cocktail Guide for Berlin

What Bar Type are you? – A Bar & Cocktail Guide for Berlin

Monkey Bar, 25h Hotel

One of the things that’s awesome about Berlin is the fact that it has something for every taste. This applies not just to the art galleries that range from big snobby ones to small playful ones, or the theater culture that has big name actors on huge stages on the one side and experimental pieces in improvised settings on the other. It is also something that you will notice in terms of nightlife. There is basically a party for every type of crowd and for every taste in music. The same goes for the bars and this is something I want to explore today.

What bar type are you? You like the classic ones with the best cocktails in the city? Or are you all about friendly and cosy atmosphere? Or do you like to have an awesome view over the city while sipping on your long drink? In our new comprehensive Bar Guide for Berlin we tried to split up the bar scene of Berlin by different types and give you some recommendation for every taste and occasion.

To save you from having to study the drinks menu for 10 minutes in every bar before you know what to order we consulted the cocktail archive of theBar.com and selected a few suitable drinks for each of our bar types. This website comes in handy when you are looking the right cocktail for you as you can search by occasion, spirit or ingredient and also have a look at the recipes that range from cocktail classics to new trendy drinks. Very practical! But now enjoy our bar and cocktail guide after the jump!

Kulturfestival Wedding & Moabit – Discovering the Unknown

Kulturfestival Wedding & Moabit – Discovering the Unknown

photo: Amtsgericht by Herz&Blut

Since the beginning of our blogging experience we realized that Berlin has so much more to discover if you just open your eyes a bit wider. We always wanted to find the hidden gems, the undiscovered artist, the small off-theater production and give them the attention they deserved. Now after 7 years we managed to have quite a good knowledge of the city, but still every once in a while we make exciting new experiences here that take our breath away.

Last week we shared a similar experience with a group of fellow Berlin bloggers (FindingBerlinHerz&Blut, Ghetogether to name a few). The guys from the Kulturfestival Wedding & Moabit wanted to show us the highlights of Wedding with a little tour and they did a marvelous job in presenting us not only spectacular architectonical highlights such as the Amtsgericht Tiergarten but also shared personal moments and anecdotes of their Kiezes with us while enjoying a slice of pizza.

From today on until September 14 the Kulturfestival Wedding & Moabit will transform these two neighborhoods into a lively creative oasis of ideas and festivities. Theater plays, dance performances, exhibitions, picnics, guided tours and of course an endless number of parties are just a few things you can experience during these days. Our recommended hotspots are the famous club Anita Berber, the monumental Amtsgericht and of course the Stattbad Wedding. Maybe after this weekend you will have a different view on Wedding and Moabit. You should also heck out our Fashion Week Guide to Wedding by the way. After the jump some more impressions from the different locations. Find out about the whole program of the festival here. read more…

Tanznacht Berlin – Discovering Uferstudios in Wedding

Tanznacht Berlin – Discovering Uferstudios in Wedding

One of my favorite places in Wedding are the Uferstudios. They have become an amazing creative factory for dance and performance in the last couple of years and I had the chance to see a bunch of interesting experimental pieces there that I would have missed in more conventional theaters. As often with off-theater spaces the choreographers and directors working there are young and unknown so far and most of the productions just play a few times only. That is why even for us it is sometimes hard to decide which pieces might be worth the trip and which are not.

Fortunately, the Tanznacht happening over the next couple of days might be the right thing for you to discover this beautiful creative space. From the 28th to the 31st of August 2014 several shows of all kinds are going to take place in the different studios. From a variety of choreographers and dancers performing during the 4-day program we can already recommend the piece by Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot which we had the chance to see before. Aside from contemporary dance, this year’s edition has a special focus on video performances screened all over the place. Also the courtyard of the location will get a design intervention by Club Real. Discover the whole program here and also check out their magazine. More photos of the performances after the jump.

The Fruit Salad Guide to Fashion Week in Wedding

The Fruit Salad Guide to Fashion Week in Wedding

Hellooooo my darrrlings, I am back all fruitilicious and colorful as always. Did you miss me? Of course!!! For everybody who doesn’t know me yet: I am Tati the Fruit Salad and I am the fashion editor-in-chief of iHeartBerlin. Watch my adventures at Fashion Week in the episodes of my very own TV show of last year.

I have amazing news for all of you. The Fashion Week is finally moving to my favourite district in all of Berlin: Wedding. There is no place where more crazy fashion and inspiration is going on than here. Every street, every shop and every corner has some fashionable shit going on and sometimes I get so many ideas for my next outfits that I am clueless what to do.

Since all kinds of people from all around the world are coming to Berlin for Fashion Week and they obviously don’t know Wedding so well like I do, I put some really nice places together where to shop, have a nice snack in between the fashion shows and an introduction to the fashion week location itself. The 8 of Paths – Art in Beijing

The 8 of Paths – Art in Beijing

Contemporary art from China is almost only known under the prominent name of Ai Weiwei. Obviously such a huge country has far more creative talent than only one single individual, even though being an artist in China is probably not the easiest job to pursue due to the dictatorial regime.

One interesting opportunity to discover new talents from China is the current exhibition The 8 of Paths which showcases a generation of artists who have gained new possibilities and new freedoms to express themselves. Presenting 23 positions by young artists living in Beijing the goal of the exhibition is to promote China as a vibrant and artistic country. Even though this goal leaves some question marks inside my head, I really enjoyed visiting the exhibition at the Uferhallen in Wedding. The artworks are very diverse and showed me really interesting cultural insights into Chinese society and their art world. The exhibition runs until July 13th 2014 and every Wednesday they are also showing cinema screenings at 19h. My photographic impressions and the address and times after the jump.

Miki Banana – A Monkeylicious Vintage Paradise

Miki Banana – A Monkeylicious Vintage Paradise

With all the vintage buzz going on Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln you probably haven’t come across one particularily amazing second hand shop in Wedding, just a few steps from the border to Mitte. Miki Banana is probably by far the most fun one of them all as the owners have put a lot of love to details and decoration into their big shop. As the name suggests there are a lot of bananas, and where there are bananas, there are also monkeys, and where there are monkeys, there are Barbies not to far. Well, the last one might be not as logical to you, as it is to me, but that’s anoter story.

The selection of clothes, shoes and accessories is pretty much focused on 80s and 90s with all the catchy it-pieces of the contemporary vintage-loving hipster, such as bold graphic print shirts, oversized jackets and Bill Cosby’s pullovers. The variety is quite big as the store has a huge stock and prices are quite fair, especially compared to most of the shops in the other districts. If you haven’t checked this place out, you should make sure to do so, you will love it. My favorite part of the shop is it’s sense of humor that makes shopping there an extra fun experience. Some more impressions and the details after the jump.

UPDATE: Unfortunately this great shop has shut down 🙁

Visiting the Wemhöner Collection

Visiting the Wemhöner Collection

photo: Helmut Newton

I love it when I have to venture out of my comfort-zone districts to discover a new gallery, theater or art space. To visit the Wemhöner Collection that is open to public until May 18, you have to leave Mitte, Prenzlauber Berg and Kreuzberg behind and take a ride to far away Wedding. But the trip is definitely worth the effort. The exclusive insights into the collection will show works from Marina Abramovic, Helmut Newton, Andreas Mühe and many more. Avant-garde photography, light sculptures and impressive video installations curated by Philipp Bollmann will give you a little excerpt into the exclusive taste of the art collector Heiner Wemhöner. But the artworks alone are not the only reason for spending an afternoon in Wedding. The gallery space inside the Osram Höfe will make you gasp because of its sophisticated but rough Berlin style architecture. More impressions and information after the jump.

We Heart Quinoa – Vegan Restaurant in Wedding

We Heart Quinoa – Vegan Restaurant in Wedding

A couple of weeks ago we were invited by a very friendly girl named Claudia (the girl in the picture and yes, she is very friendly)  to discover her new concept restaurant Quinoa at Panke e.V. Across from Stattbad Wedding in a quiet terrace we enjoyed a lovely evening by learning more about her vision of healthy food and playfulness with food.  While enjoying her delicious vegan snacks Frank, Lia and I talked with her about the vastity of nutritional possibilities Berlin has to offer. At Quinoa they are just serving freshly cooked vegan but still affordable food. Some of the ingredients even come from the garden at Panke e.V. And I can tell you that the food is beyond amazing. This Friday they are organizing a Concert Cocktail with Food, I am very happy to recommend you to go. After the jump there is the flyer with the information and some pictures of our lovely night.

Restaurant Volta in Wedding

Restaurant Volta in Wedding

I kept hearing about this new place Volta in Wedding now for the past few months and was very eager to check it out as it’s only a few blocks up my street. Located near the U8 subway stop Voltastraße it’s conveniently close to Mitte. Even though the super huge district Wedding still hasn’t found the type of Kiez infrastructure that we are all familiar with from Neukölln, Kreuzberg and Mitte, it still is developing quite nicely and offers more and more interesting places spread over its entirety.

The restraurant and bar Volta is the latest addition and quite an impressive one. No wonder, as it’s run by Cookies-chef Stephan Hentschel. The menu is quite diverse and very creative. Most of the dishes have the size of startes, so I recommend ordering at least two to get a taste of the variety. With prices between 5 and 7 EUR I think this is pretty fair, especially considering the great quality, refined look and awesome taste. My favorites are the red beet slices on yoghurt and the entrecôte on sticks. Delicious! The dessert is also quite exceptional, you have to try it! And what made the whole visit even better was the service which was super friendly and charming. This might very well become my new favorite place! Have a look at my impressions and the details after the jump.
