Greek Lifestyle in Berlin

Greek Lifestyle in Berlin

As mundane as it may sound, Berlin is the very definition of a melting pot. It has always reminded me of an immense theater stage, where all countries take their position and as soon as the lights start to dim, they begin interacting with each other; they fight, they love, they live, but most of all they constantly try to make their stories get heard as loud as possible. There is one thing they have always in common: they are fully in sync with their multicultural environment and in the case of Greece miles away from the picture drawn by Nia Vardalos’ Big Fat – filled with stereotypes, yet utterly entertaining – Greek Wedding.

Several Greek places around the world – cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, concerts etc. – have always made me feel like Alice in Wonderland, but to a more twisted and disturbing extent than Lewis Carroll’s bizarre universe. It is mostly the image of people being lost in their Greek microcosm, fully ignorant of the overwhelming benefits life abroad has to offer, that brings discontent to me. And it is then, when you realize that for some coming from the same place has developed into the one and only criterion of socializing with people.

However, this story is about those who have become citizens of the world and their Greek identity represents a part of it and not vice versa. Here a few examples of Greek businesses and artists active in Berlin who choose to work and live through the aforementioned identity.

Street Food around the World

Street Food around the World

Food is a way of coming together, a huge chunk of culture, a defining moment of – you guessed it – taste.

While in some cultures street food has always been a big part of daily life, it is on the up-and-up in Berlin, bringing delicious and quality street food that matches the fast pace of the metropolis. Next to the long-existing bratwurst, currywurst and döner there are numerous opportunities to expand your taste buds. Korean, Japanese, Mexican, you name it: Food is like a language, ever evolving. Time to get behind the magic.

Together with filmmaker Karsten Boysen, the guys of OSK made a lovely video about street food, following their hunger and ideas behind it. Observing and portraying the fast (but good) food on the streets in New York, Beijing and of course Berlin. See the foodie-licious result with a good chunk about the popular Street Food Thursday at Markthalle IX after the jump. read more…

The Secret Ingredients of Foodporn

The Secret Ingredients of Foodporn

photo: Our Food Stories

Fashion changes and beauty fades, but one thing that will always play an important role in our everyday life is food! No surprise that food blogs are on the rise, and my Instagram feed is full of amazing food creators. Yes, food photography, food styling, food art and #foodporn: we just can’t get enough of it. Maybe because pictures of food inspire us in the kitchen, encourage us to change up the menu and discover new, interesting and healthy recipes. It’s something that seems beneficial for our own heart, body and soul.

Becoming a food blogger might seem easy because, well, we all know how to make pancakes and a quiche. But that’s not completely right – there is a big difference between cooking for yourself and cooking for a bigger audience, like for the eyes of a thousand followers. Food blogging is a new form of art, and only true creators of real foodporn know: there is a lot of work and practice behind creating a meal that does not only taste good, but also visually appeals to the world on Facebook and Instagram. We asked three specialists of the German food blog community about their secret ingredients of foodporn. The answers and amazing photos after the jump…

A Festive Dinner Made Easy

A Festive Dinner Made Easy

With the holidays coming up we’re already in quite the festive mood! The best way to fight the darkness and cold outside is by filling our homes with warm candle lights and the smell of yummy, home-cooked food, ideally shared with friends and family.

Last week I invited my fellow iHeartBerlin writers to my house to have an early Christmas dinner, completed with a festive meal, a Christmas tree and of course presents. It’s become a bit of a tradition in the last years and it always fills me with joy to host my team and friends here.

We were lucky to be supplied with food and drink by one of the several new awesome food delivery services: Eat First. When you think of delivery a festive Christmas menu doesn’t really come to mind, because which restaurant is gonna deliver an entire roast? But Eat First is different, they have their own menu of pre-cooked dishes that change every day created by talented chefs from the city. And they bring it to your house neatly packaged, you only have to reheat it and it’s ready to be served.

For the holidays they even have a roast duck with traditional sides that are typical for a festive meal in Germany. It’s super practical for all of those who would love a roast for Christmas but don’t really have the time or talent to prepare one. Of course there are also vegetarian and vegan options! We have some impressions for you after the jump. Happy Holidays!

Eating & Drinking For A Good Cause

Eating & Drinking For A Good Cause

photo: Oh Sophia

It’s Christmas time, a good chance to be thoughtful, thankful and helpful. Especially with thousands of refugees arriving in Berlin this year, giving back to people in need becomes an even bigger issue and responsibility for our community. We’re living in a time were we need to reach out to each other, face our global challenges and help together. After visiting some Charity Christmas Markets and donating some money to our Blogfabrik Project #HelpDontHate, we want to look at some other alternatives to help in Berlin. So what do you think about eating and drinking for a good cause?

We found some wonderful and delicious events happening this month that we want to share with you after the jump…

Spareribs, Icecream and Whiskey – Bite Club meets Singleton

Spareribs, Icecream and Whiskey – Bite Club meets Singleton

On Friday the awesome Bite Club street food market had its final edition as an open air at the Spree this year. I was lucky to be invited by Singleton to join the fun and I’m glad I followed their invitation because this turned out to be a massive pleasure for my taste buds. I hadn’t been to this location for the Bite Club in a while and I am glad to see that it has developed so nicely since my last visit with great trucks and booths and an interesting crowd who enjoys good food.

The Singleton took the opportunity at Bite Club to present all their different whiskeys at their lovingly decorated bar where you could get three unique cocktails and at the charming flavor garden where you could have a special tasting experience of the different kinds of whiskey they offer. They had also teamed up with a couple of the other street food vendors to come up with whiskey-infused dishes.

One of them was the Pignut BBQ from the Armeniusmarkthalle in Moabit. I tasted their ribs the first time at the Bite Club BBQ at the Funkhaus Nalepastraße a while back and was blown away by how amazingly delicious these ribs are – the best ones I have ever tasted in Berlin. For this edition of the Bite Club they had a special sauce prepare with Singleton, and one of the cocktails of the Singleton bar had their BBQ sauce as one of the ingredients (sounds unusual but was really nice). The second collaboration was with Jones Icecream who had a special Singletonbites ice cream and cookie mix with a caramel whiskey sauce – yum! After the jump we have some impressions of the Bite Club and a little cocktail recipe video for you.

The Healthy Way to Eat with Deliciously Ella

The Healthy Way to Eat with Deliciously Ella

In the last couple of years many people have had a bit of an awakening in terms of food. Organic supermarkets, vegan restaurants, locally produced products and special diet catering are some of the new developments that we find ourselves surrounded with and that are replacing the old sources for food for more and more people. Some like to call it a trend, but I think that’s not what it is. It’s a change of mind, it’s the realization that the food industry is selling us shit that is bad for us and the world. It’s a development caused by education and I think for a big part we have the internet to thank for this. We no longer have to be slaves to traditions, habits and mainstream supermarket products. Because now there are food blogs, cook books, organic shops and delivery services out there that supply us with knowledge, recipes and ingredients for a better way of eating.

Ella Woodward is one of these people who are pushing the health food movement forward with her blog Deliciously Ella. She is, you could say, the British version of our own Berlin vegan expert Oh Sophia, and she too has now released an amazing cookbook that we want to introduce you to today. After the jump we will give you a little insight into Deliciously Ella with a list of 7 of her most important basic ingredients that make excellent healthy replacements for milk products, white flower, and refined sugar.
