I know, there’s only so much you can ask for from a place right? And considering that already Berlin is giving us SO much, it feels ungrateful to be asking for more. It is sexy, it is affordable, it is tolerant, it is fun. But still, there’s certain things Berliners crave for, these few things missing that would truly make it paradise, and us unable to ever leave it.

Like, for instance, I think, I don’t know if you agree, um, maybe we could use nicer weather? I don’t mean to sound unthankful for all the blessings this city gracefully bestows upon us, but we could do without these forever-winters. Of course once the frost spell is broken it gets to be really beautiful, it’s just not enough of that. Berliners show their fascination with the good weather, right when the first sign of it appears: ready to get naked and run to a lake, wearing smiles we definitely need to see more of.

The Notebooks for the Next Generation

A few weeks ago we were lucky to witness something quite special during a presentation at the Blogfabrik. Our partner Huawei who we’ve collaborated with recently for our smartphone vs. DSLR camera test invited us and a couple of blogger colleagues to introduce us to a brand new product that they had been working on. But it was not another edition of their high-end smartphone lines as we expected, this time it was something completely different that will expand the spectrum of the company into an entirely new market: notebooks. With the new Huawei MateBook X the brand revealed the long-awaited Windows operated alternative to the Macbook. Of course there have been other products on the market before, but to be honest so far I have seen nothing that comes close to these levels of design perfection and performance.

Berlin Illustrations That Will Melt Your Heart

The internet’s just great, isn’t it? Giving you access to the coolest blogs (like iHeartBerlin!! 😎 ), and also to discovering artists you wouldn’t otherwise: Jenny O’Boyle is one of them, and her illustrations will make you want to hug them. Jenny is a professional illustrator, running both a physical store at Wissmannstr. 21 and an online shop, both called bär von pappe (meaning bear of cardboard), selling her work as well as a line of sustainable stationery. Everything she designs is super cute, and we’d suggest once you find yourself near Hermannplatz, looking for a cute notebook in which to write about all your Berlin adventures, that you go and check out her stuff.

Lovers of all things Berlin as we are, what caught our eye is one of the artist’s city-themed projects, where she sets out to explore an object for each street of Berlin, and in this way, guide us around every neighborhood by means of illustration. Massive undertaking as it sounds, she’s done, however, a beautiful job so far, taking us from one massive monument, building, subway station or fountain to the next all the way from Mitte, over Kreuzberg, down to Neukölln. How to Re-organize & Style your Apartment the Berlin Way

It’s Spring and you know what is one of the favorite rituals for Germans to do in Spring? Bringing everything back in order in the house. We also call it “Frühjahrsputz” meaning Spring Cleaning. Of course in Berlin this means finally bringing all the beer and Club Mate bottles that have piled up in the corner back to the Späti to receive some Pfand, changing out some Automaten photos from some ex lovers with new ones and bringing that stack of vintage clothes that become unfashionable back to the vintage shops.

But if you really want to be a pro about the Frühjahrsputz you also have to consider some re-styling and re-decorating. Because every year is different in Berlin and this should also reflect in your own four walls.

We teamed up with the interior experts of Granit who recently opened their first store in Berlin on Rosenthaler Straße in Mitte to come up with some interior ideas that reflect the spirit of Berlin. Granit hails all the way from Sweden and naturally the Berliners are eating it up as they love everything from Scandinavia. They offer interior products as well as household and office accessories with a very minimal, timeless and iconic design. It’s a total match made in heaven with the style of Berlin that has a quite raw, industrial aesthetic.

Blackout Berlin: An Abstract Interpretation of the City

Apart from a refuge, Berlin has served as a muse to artists in search for inspiration; both by its welcoming and freeing atmosphere, as well as its exciting subject matter. And it is Berlin that inspired Marie M. Benaboud with her artistic project, Blackout Cities. The Moroccan/Swiss/Belgian architect chooses the city’s most recognizable landmarks as a theme for her project’s first series, reintroducing them to us in an imposing, yet minimal manner.

She combines architecture, photography, and illustration to imprint her unique vision on the urban landscape. Her tools to creating the enigmatic atmosphere that characterizes her work are her strong compositions, the exclusive use of black, as well as the absence of human presence. All her pieces have a personal touch as they are all handmade, silkscreen printed in her atelier in Wedding, in limited editions.

Recently, the artist announced her collaboration with of/Berlin, a store that hosts unique Berlin designs, making it easier for us to check out her work, either through the store’s website, their physical store in Kreuzberg, or through the blog dedicated solely to the project.

In Bed with Berliners

There are some days in this city we call Berlin when you JUST WANT TO STAY IN BED. Simply forever. When you are with somebody special that you simply cannot separate from. Or when you are just happy with yourself, being lazy with a book, your diary or your laptop in front of you with your favorite TV series. And the best part? You can be naked as much as you want because there are cushions and blankets serving as your shield against the cold and hostile world out there.

I know in fact many Berliners who can lead quite bed-centric lives here completely ignoring all social activities, cool events or rays of sunlight outside becaue they prefer to just stay in and cuddle naked with their pillow, their loved ones or their loved ONS. The Berlin-based bed makers of Hochflieger came up with an incredibly intimate photo series of Berliners in their homes in their bed all naked. eBay Stages Installation of Most Successful Products at Bikini Berlin

This weekend online market place eBay staged a large installation of a selection of some of their most successful products in the high-concept shopping mall Bikini Berlin offering visitors a chance to win their favorite product. With the event eBay once again showed how diverse their product range is and that there really is the perfect product for everyone.

We live in a world surrounded by purely digital products: online shops, smartphone apps, social media platforms. We spend so much time with these virtual entities that we somehow completely loose touch with the companies behind them. An event like this is a great opportunity for users to connect a “face” with something we otherwise only use as a tool. I see the events that we’ve done with iHeartBerlin over the last 10 years as the same thing. It’s a way for us to manifest the blog in the real world, get to know our readers, and showcase that we do more than just writing about things, we can also create them and take part in the cultural ongoings of Berlin.

During my Art Direction and Design Studies I read a lot about timeless design. Is this a real phenomenon or is minimal design for instance just a passing fad and we only consider it today as kind of timeless? It’s definitely not as easy to define as one might think in the beginning. When reading more about „timelessness” and sustainable materials you cannot get around the most obvious one of all: Wood. There is a reason why it is one of the oldest and most commonly used, still beloved materials.
