“Torstraße 1” is a great novel capturing the story of the building embedded in the daily life of 2 families closely connected to it 🙂
Interesting? What does “first department store where you could pay in rates” mean? Were prices on a sliding scale?
you buy on credit and pay off in smaller rates over a period of time. it was a new concept at the time.
Nice Post!

from communism to capitalism
Excellent article. We just stayed for 4 days and Soho House does an excellent job of whitewashing history and even humorising it with the nod nod, wink wink Politburo room. Why don’t they openly have a gallery showing its history. Or is this not wanted by the Germans as even the Wall has all but been erased. This is real 20th century history that teaches us to put today in context. The glib marketing text of the Bauhaus interiors is also just wrong. Soho House can do a far better job to be honest and not pander to making this a fun, hip, cool island when it can also educate and inform.
Keep in mind where the global company Soho House comes from originally 😉
