Murals of Berlin: Agostino Iacurci

Street art is an essential part of the Berlin DNA and a powerful output of the local creative culture. Particularly popular to tourists and locals alike are giant murals embellishing the old firewalls. Some of these murals even get certain fame and have the potential to become even a steady landmark of the city.

But street art in opposition to public art (art created and funded by an institution or the government) is not supposed to become a landmark or to be perceived as steady. No wonder that the famous artist Blu decided to paint over his magnificent work leaving nothing else than a black shadow behind. Read more of our thoughts about that in this article.

But even if some street art might disappear over time there is still place and space for new art. For the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall the Italian region Puglia decided to give Berlin a unique present. They commissioned the Italian artist Agostino Iacurci from this region to create a unique work of art representing the human aspects of the unification. His beautiful work where he combines his typical urban motives with the natural idyll of his home is now on display on a wall at Moritzplatz, near the former border check-point Heinrich-Heine-Straße.
We had the chance to speak to the artist and visit the artwork while it was created. Check out more images of the artwork after the jump and some information about a little contest where you can win a trip to Italy’s finest beaches in Puglia.

Agostino Iacurci is worldwide famous for his simplistic yet unconventional murals always challenging the viewer with a new perspective. His street art is not in any way a disturbance of the public space but somehow fits nearly naturally in it. After creating beautiful works around the world now he has created an artwork in Berlin. See below some of his great pieces from around the world.

This kind of creative dialogue between Berlin and other places in the world is a beautiful way of creating a positive exchange especially now where Berlin is becoming more and more international. Artists represented by their work can become positive ambassadors of their countries and I think that way more countries and region in the world should try this approach instead of the classical boring tourist advertising.
The artwork of Agostino Iacurci is a personal invitation to the people of Berlin to explore his homeland. He told us that Puglia is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich regions of Italy. There you can discover incredible landscapes, an untouched nature and a great variety of organic food and products.

Even if Puglia is the high-heel of the Italian boot it should be on top of your list of places to discover. The decision to choose a street artist to represent and communicate their region indicates their bold approach to communication and creative freedom of this specific Italian region.
If you have become curious to learn more about this special place in Italy you can find out more on the website of We are in Puglia. Also they want the people of Berlin to participate in the creative dialogue between Berlin and Puglia. For that reason they started a creative contest happening on the social web. The most creative participant that succeeds in making a magnificent picture of the artwork and inventing a great hashtag will win a wonderful trip to the sandy beaches of Puglia and be able to taste the delicious treats of the local cuisine. Everybody can participate in the contest by following these steps:

1. Create a funny, inventive, special photo of the mural painted by Agostino in Kreuzberg (Prinzenstrasse 32-24)
