A Festive Restaurant Guide for Berlin

The holidays are coming up and those of you who will spend them here in Berlin might wonder: What restaurants should I go to for Christmas, New Year’s Eve or other festive holidays? Because obviously your typical burger joint or sushi place does not really fit the atmosphere here. And of course: Since these are all official holidays which places are even open, or offer a special menu for those special days? We compiled a list of our favorite restaurants – newbies and classics – that will serve you delicious food in the perfect holiday spirit. (Make sure to make your reservations early though as they might be booked out soon and keep in mind that some places will have set menus and special prices during the holidays.)

Alpenstück

During the day this place is a charming Austrian bakery while on the evening it turns into a really cosy Alpine dinner parlor. The recipes are less fancy and more down to Earth, but that is what makes this place so genuine. A great place to enjoy a “zünftiger Braten” for the holidays and pretty much one of only a few places that is actually open on the 24th.

Alpenstück, Gartenstraße 9, 10115 Berlin-Mitte

Open daily 18 – 01h

Jolesch

For the Alp lovers in Kreuzberg this place is a must. The interior is more sophisticated than Alpine but the original Austrian food will compensate. Apparently this place has also one of the best Wiener Schnitzels in town, what better time to try it our than during the holidays!

Open daily from 11:30-00h

Katz Orange

One of Berlin’s true pearls is the Katz Orange. The restaurant is located in a stunning old villa in a backyard of Bergstraße in Mitte. The barnyard-meets-vintage-factory interior is perfectly cosy and interesting to observe and there are a lot of charming details to keep you occupied while waiting for your meals to arrive such as the beautiful mixed-up vintage silverware.

Katz Orange, Bergstr. 22, 10115 Berlin-Mitte

Opens Tue-Sat at 18h

Mädchen ohne Abitur

The unusual name of this restaurant based in the South of Kreuzberg roughly translates to “girl without high school degree”. What does that have to do with anything, you might wonder! Nothing really, but it surely is a name you won’t forget so easily. The food on the other hand is not kitschy at all. Here you will find traditional German dishes such as Königsberger Klopse and fried liver with apple and onions, mixed with a few international dishes. What I was most delighted with was the Laugengebäck that we got as a starter. The best starter bread I ever had.

Mädchen Ohne Abitur, Körtestraße 5, 10967 Berlin-Kreuzberg

Open daily 18-01h

Drei Schwestern

This lovely restaurant and beer garden is located inside the former mental hospital Bethanien at Mariannenplatz. It’s truly a beautiful building and also the restaurant inside is a nice surprise. It’s more on the traditional side of things, also concerning the meals. This is actually my number one place to bring my parents for dinner because it satisfies both young and old generations.

Drei Schwestern, Mariannenplatz 2, 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg

Open daily 11-23h

Muntagnola

In the middle of the heart of gay Schöneberg, there is a culinary pearl that will teach you new secrets and wonders of the Italian cuisine. Located on Fuggerstraße 27, Trattoria a’ Muntagnola run by Pino and his wise mother Angela is a true Italian classic in Berlin. Even though the interior is truly inspired by Italian exaggeration the food you will taste there can easily beat that of many star restaurants.

Trattoria a’ Muntagnola, Fuggerstraße 27, 10777 Berlin-Schöneberg

Open every day from 17-24h

Kopps

How about a vegan holiday feast? Kopps is pretty much a classic when it comes to vegan restaurants in Berlin. Since 2011 they are successfully serving their clever 2-4 course menus that are created from local sources, healthy ingredients of bio-certified quality. On the weekends you can also enjoy a big brunch buffet until 16h. Can’t go wrong here.

Kopps, Linienstr. 94, 10115 Berlin-Mitte

Open Mon-Fri 18-24h, Sat-Sun 09:30-16h & 18:00-24h

At Volt, high class cooking meets regional products and regional dishes. Fine Berlin dining, as they say, where traditional german dishes are interpreted in new tasty ways. Definitely a fantastic restaurant to visit at New Years Eve to end this year on a high note!

Kurhaus Kursakow

My first visit to the Kurhaus was absolutely pleasant. On the menu, you’ll find very traditional German specialties for reasonable prices. My plate of Rouladen, which is one of my favorite German dishes, looked a lot like you would expect it from your loving German granny. Very yummie! With the traditional kitschy interior of the place you quickly feel at home here.

Kurhaus Kursakow, Grünberger Straße 81, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain

Open Mon-Fri 17-24h, Sat-Sun 9-24h

PeterPaul

I think we haven’t had a German restaurant in our gastro novelties in a while. But Peter Paul is just that: typical German dishes like Roulade, Königsberger Klopse, Sauerbraten, Spargel and Bouletten. The twist: They come as tapas sized dishes so you get to try many of them. It’s perfect to introduce Berlin visitors to German dishes.

PeterPaul, Torstr. 99, 10119 Berlin-Mitte

Open Tue-  Sat, 17-01h, Tel: +49-30 43 77 30 43
