A Guide to Open Air Cinemas in Berlin

Summer is practically here – time to rapidly take advantage of the good weather. There are many ways to enjoy the Summer daylight hours in the sun. Go for a swim, meet friends for an Aperitif or do some outdoor activities. But if you also want to spend the evenings catching some fresh air you should definitely visit an open air cinema and watch an awesome movie in these last summer weeks.

We would like to introduce you to a couple of open air cinemas, which not only convince with their cozy atmosphere, but also offer an interesting program. Read an introduction for the open air cinemas und their program after the jump.

Freiluftkino Kreuzberg

Near the Kottbusser Tor at Mariannenplatz you can visit one of Berlin’s oldest open air cinemas, which screened its first film in 1994. If you would like to watch the latest films in the original version with German or English subtitles that’s the place to be!

Sommerkino Kulturforum at Potsdamer Platz

Enjoy an unforgettable film experience in the middle of Berlin’s cultural focus. Watch your favorite movies of the last few months at a location between Philharmonie, the Art Library and the St. Matthäus Church. The program changes daily.

Mobile Kino

Mobile Kino is Berlin’s travel pop-up cinema. With a different, unusual location for every screening, they allow us to enjoy films at places we never thought we would. Galleries and clubs, beer gardens, even lakeside camping spots. The program includes new release indie films, pre-release preview screenings, classic retrospectives, short films and random street projections, and all  films are in original language with English subtitles.

Freiluftkino Rosengarten

In the beautiful Rosengarten on Weinbergsweg you can sit down in between roses and watch a beloved movie classic, for example Trainspotting from 1996. A beautiful chance to catch one of the older films on the big screen.

Nomadenkino Berlin

Nomadenkino Berlin stands for experimental and art cinema. There are various locations many of which are located under the open sky. You can watch movies at about blank, Holzmarkt, Rummelsburg and many other places – several venues that are otherwise only known from partying, invite you to a cozy get-together night.

Freilichtbühne Weißensee

At the open air stage in Weißensee you can watch a mix of horror, old GDR and children’s films. The venue is near the „White lake“ and is also used for various festivals such as the “By The Lake Festival”.

Freiluftkino Rehberge

In the heart of Wedding, Freiluftkino Rehberge is the perfect way to relax under the starry sky on a summer night, as it offers a variety of both Hollywood and independent films. Catch up with all the movies you missed during the past year in a lovely 15.000 seats open air theater!

Freiluftkino Hasenheide

Freiluftkino Hasenheide is an ideal choice for a warm night in Neukölln, enjoying ‘zitty’s’ choice of cult films, with a few selected mainstream ones. There’s a different film every day, running under any weather!

Freiluftkino Insel

The beautiful summer garden of Cassiopeia in the Friedrichschainer Südkiez hosts the lovely open air cinema; open with different films almost all days of the week, they even offer you a blanket so you can cozy up and enjoy your film!

Open Air Kino Mitte at Kino Central

From May to July, Kino Central runs an Open Air in its cozy backyard, sweetening our summer nights with old as well as new films, all in english or with english subtitles. While waiting for the screening to begin, don’t miss out on enjoying a glass of wine on Kino Central’s terrace!

Freiluftkino Pompeji at Ostkreuz

Located in ruins, this open air movie theater in Friedrichshain has us travel in time with its unusual Mediterranean atmosphere. Movies and concerts are to be enjoyed under the moonlit sky, along with beer that they themselves brew!

Spandau Open Air Kino

Situated in the inner yard of Spandau Public Library, Spandau Open Air offers a nice mix of arthouse cinema, as well as comedies and romantic films for us to enjoy under the sky, with 250 sun chairs and a kiosk equipped with the necessary popcorn and cold drinks, to ice cream and soup! Blankets and pillows can be provided, and you can bring your four-legged friend along, as it is dog friendly.

Open Air Kulturfabrik Moabit

During the summer months, Filmrauschpalast in Kulturfabrik, Moabit turns its outside wall into a screen, and its backyard into an open air cinema, where films of cultural interest can be enjoyed. It is an excellent choice for your Friday or Saturday nights.
