With so many great Mexican and Mexican-inspired restaurants in Berlin already you would think our bellies would be full with Tacos. Nonetheless it was a compelling prospect for us to get one more – but with a completely different approach. We already highlighted La Lucha in our New Restaurants Guide 2017, and now we all finally got the chance to experience one of Kreuzberg’s most exciting gastronomic newcomers, – reason enough for a ‘lil review.
The most striking thing first: La Lucha’s colorful interiors are a great visual representation of its culinary mission. It’s modern and chic while still feeling quite Mexican. Collectively undecided on what to take, we kind of ordered the whole menu – an advantage when you arrive in a big group and in favor of the restaurants concept of sharing plates as all the dishes arrive one after another. The dished for the most part sounded familiar, but familiar with a little twist:
Crispy buttered chrysanthemum flowers, enmoladas with chicken and watermelon, burritos with pineapple and bone marrow – surprising combinations, and surprisingly good! And while sipping on the third margarita or so, everyone was eagerly picking up the last crumbs on their plates.
For all the Berlin foodies who want to explore a different interpretation of Mexican cooking in fresh, original interiors, this culinary excursion is highly recommended. And it’s particularly fun in groups!
And in the spirit of Mexican hospitality a shot of Mezcal or Tequila at the end of your meal is on the house. Shame on us, we are no good at drinking tequila, and our lovely waiter could not take how we just drained this traditional Mexican liquor in one gulp – these uncultured Europeans! So, we got another one round, to do it the right way. Thank you La Lucha, ‘til next time, and we’ll never drink Tequila the wrong way again. Promise!
