All these stories will be accompanied by regular distractions like cheeky sexual scenes, contagious group dances, and collective renditions of pop songs from former decades.
The costumes and the stage with a big staircase at its center seemed to come straight from Friedrichstadtpalast, the notorious show theater that is famous for its more light-hearted (or let’s call them cheesy) shows. But while in this kind of theater, the dancers are all the same size (skinny and tall) and are trained to be perfectly synchronized, Macras company is letting the dancers embrace their individuality. The audience was really charmed by the dancers and the show unfolding in front of their eyes. So yes, you might not find a show all about perfection here, but instead a big portion of humor, wittiness, and a lot of personalities. And who wants perfection in show business anyway, right?
Constanza Macras’s company Dorky Park, which was established in 2000, brings together dancers from all over the world, with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and training. This diversity is evident not only in the dancers’ physical appearances, but also in their unique styles, movements, and perspectives. They have different body types, ages, and abilities. They also come from various dance backgrounds, including contemporary dance, ballet, hip-hop, aerial acrobatics, and traditional folk dance. Instead of trying to mold the dancers into a single, homogeneous group, she embraces their individuality and allows them to bring their own stories and emotions to the stage.
