The Pressing: A Pussy-Centric Performance Giving the Vulva a Voice

No matter how happy or miserable, wealthy or poor, we all came from the same place – the vulva. Performer Dani Brown states in her newest Performance “The Pressing” at Radialsystem this weekend the question how our world would be if the female sexual and reproductive organ would be on center stage.

The Berlin TV tower and probably all skyscrapers are proof of the phallic-centrism of our world. The phallic form (long and strong) is celebrated in art all around the world. And also our economy works like penis, growth-oriented and just about getting stuff out there. As we see with our economy and its consequences not everything should be about growth. So maybe we should be begging for more pussy-centric thinking to save us all from doomsday.

What felt like a good start for this shift was watching the new performance The Pressing from dancer and performer Dani Brown at Radialsystem. Embracing the power of her vulva, she shows us different movements and stories that her vulva would tell on stage. Or maybe not just her vulva but “the vulva”. Through different scenes Dani Brown transformed her pussy into a mythological being. The beginning of the world that we all have seen from inside and out, but now are neglecting and trying to diminish her powers.

This piece hits your perception differently for many reasons. It has a lot of quiet and contemplative parts where you have time to discover the beautiful stage with its hidden elements like the moths flying trapped inside flower cages. Other parts are more dynamic, playful, fun and provocative. Yet the provocation is much more about the revolutionary ideas the vulva is telling us than about the fact that Dani Brown is 80% of the piece half naked. Especially the idea to take away the male gaze from the vulva itself is what makes this piece so powerful for me and why I would recommend it for everybody who is curious to see a new perspective on the world.

Tickets and more infos about the show.

The piece is in english language.
