With his 5th Symphony, Gustav Mahler opened a new chapter in his creative work. Written in the early years of the 20th century, this music became an expression of a new era, of Mahler’s immediate present, which shows itself in all its ambivalence and turmoil, which admittedly does not exclude a sinking into romantic spheres. The Cello Concerto by the Korean composer Unsuk Chin, premiered in 2009 and, written for a large orchestra, also leads into extraordinary sound worlds – with a variety of playing techniques and expressive gestures.
