Rarely before has a composer stepped onto the scene with such power and self-confidence as Gustav Mahler did with his 1st Symphony. A cosmos of possibilities opened up for him: The characteristic “Mahler tone” is present from the beginning, as is the unconditionality of musical expression. Béla Bartók’s two-movement 1st Violin Concerto is also an astonishing work, composed in 1907/08 as a reflection of his affection for his friend Stefi Geyer, a violinist, although it was only performed posthumously. The Bartók of the later period is already more than foreshadowed.
