On March 11, 2023, the new two-part evening by Sasha Waltz & Guests entitled “Beethoven 7” will premiere at Radialsystem. A choreography by Sasha Waltz to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and a commissioned work by contemporary composer Diego Noguera.
In “Beethoven 7”, Sasha Waltz and an ensemble of 13 dancers dedicate themselves to the complete “Symphony No. 7 in A major (op. 92)”. To the electronic sounds of Diego Noguera with the title “Freiheit/Extasis” (Freedom/Extasis), which are created during the creation process, the choreographer spins threads and thoughts, which already play a role in Beethoven’s 7th symphony, into the 21st century and searches for a current answer to urgent questions of the composer.
Already in June 2021, Sasha Waltz had created a choreography to two movements of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th symphony in the ancient temple site of Delphi as part of the Beethoven Day “With Beethoven through Europe” of the European culture channel ARTE. The music has not let her go since.
In 1812, Beethoven noted in his diary the question “[I]st der ächte Wahre Mensch / Ein Sklave der Umgebung oder Frey?” (Is the real true man a slave to the environment or is he free?), and – personally disappointed – saw the political idea of freedom fail between the French Revolution and the European Restoration. At the same time, his work is a formative expression of an aesthetic idea of artistic freedom.
