“How can we find our true identity while we are constantly being defined from the outside?”
As a queer artist, Sebastian Abarbanell addresses questions that concern them on a personal and emotional level, closely related to their queerness. They want to initiate and stimulate new ways of thinking about notions and conceptions of the human being that are deeply rooted in our society and often still lack acceptance of queer identities. With their work they aim to inspire ongoing conversations and contribute to a collective healing process.
In early March, the freelance dance artist and choreographer will present their multidisciplinary production HOME at Uferstudios Berlin.
Sebastian Abarbanell graduated from Trinity Laban in London and has worked with a variety of artists and companies in New York City, including Sidra Bell Dance New York, Gallim Dance and BIRDHOUSE. In HOME they combine dance, music, light, video and visual art to a multidisciplinary movement installation. In this solo piece, the body is placed into relationships with various scenic elements and forces, merging with or separating from them to create visual symbols, abstract or minimalistic images, as well as complex physicalities and movements sequences that reveal, highlight, or obscure the body.
HOME explores self-discovery and individuality, the external forces that affect these and how both, the Self and these external forces, are in constant motion. In the upcoming series of this solo production, which premiered at Uferstudios Berlin in 2021, HOME will be performed by Alvin Collantes, a dance and drag artist, and Sebastian Abarbanell on two evenings each.
