Mykki Blanco have built up a lasting career in the past decade. While many musicians experience high-speed exploitation in the market through hypes and too much profit orientation, Mykki Blanco have advanced step by step. A brilliant debut album and excessive touring at the beginning of the 2010s made Mykki Blanco a staple in an international community of artists committed to supporting each other across the most diverse genres and disciplines. The community bucks the centralised system of exploitation of pop culture which makes adversaries from fellow-musicians blatantly drawing off each others‘ ideas. Mykki played a decisive role in shaping this solidary community and opened many doors for queer BPOC artists through their music, performances and visibility. Since queerness too often functions as ‚othering‘ and serves to blanket groundbreaking musicians, let’s be clear about this: Mykki Blanco is where they are now as a result of their multiple and multidisciplinary talents. Their rap is precise and to the point, full of contemporary references. The lyrics tell stories revolving around socio-critical topics in poetic and witty ways from a black and queer perspective. Their album Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep is the first release in five years, featuring Blood Orange, Big Freedia and Jamila Woods. It is more pop than previous albums bringing familiar themes on to the big stage to a wider audience. Instead of a DJ, the live show will, for the first time, feature a live band with background singers.
