Invited by Neue Nationalgalerie to be part of PERFORM! Festival, TRAUMA presents Esben Weile Kjær’s large-scale performance GALAXY PARADE.
Exploring the parade as a performative phenomenon, distinct archetypal groups contribute their choreographies in a durational performance that encircles the iconic architecture of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Sound Composition by German composer Europa.
Historically parades have marked and manifested celebration, freedom, power, and violence in contrasting ways across all societies. This performance leverages and re-contextualises archetypal pop-cultural groups to create a work that dramatically unfolds over the course of two hours.
A specially produced sound composition by the German producer EUROPA will be accompanying the parade, providing a suspenseful soundscape for the work as the sun sets over Berlin. The participants include local members from marching bands, cheerleaders, rhythmic gymnasts, roller skate dancers and more. Each archetypal group brings its own unique choreographies, allowing them to perform as distinct symbols, reflecting and amplifying their characteristic movement aesthetics.
The collective tableau of these groups, presented en masse, creates a disorienting yet oddly familiar spectacle. As the performance builds to its climax, each group will be cued to break away from the parade formation, allowing them to reclaim the spotlight in smaller, featured performances. In this way, GALAXY PARADE becomes both a vibrant tapestry of pop culture and a platform for local groups to shine at different moments.
