After working on international projects in theatre and exhibition settings, Adam Linder returns to his earliest experience of the performing arts: ballet. Classical ballet has long been largely unchanged with its corps-de-ballet formations, partner work, and visual language. The choreographer lovingly attempts to shake up this traditional stage form, bringing it into the 21st century with contemporary technical approaches.
To the music of the British avant-garde band Coil, five world-class dancers weave virtuosity, theatricality, and abstraction into a hybrid vocabulary of movement that is at once raw and subtle, melancholy and serene. The performance also offers a critique of the power relations embedded within classical ballet. How can representations of gender and race be changed, and what movement should the dancers remain loyal to?
