Motivation – by Alexander Steffen
The motto of this year’s 48h Neukölln festival immediately appealed to me. Urban silence. What at first sounds like a contradiction is actually an apt description of the place I long for.
Getting lost in the city to find peace and quiet – this has been my motivation for travelling through the city for many years, photographing places threatened with disappearance: Striking shop fronts, industrial buildings that have become unprofitable, overgrown and deserted wastelands and, last but not least, the vacancies that sometimes characterise entire streets.
The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 reinforced my motivation. Suddenly, standstill reigned everywhere. Instead of individual shops, entire professional groups were now in danger of disappearing. Cinemas, concert halls and theatres stood empty for months. Berlin was closed.
A quiet city has an eerie effect on many people. For me, it was the inspiration for my last photo book ‘In der Zwischenzeit / For the Time Being’. I am delighted to be able to show a current selection of my photographs as well as new mtifs of the silk print series „The tatooed city“ in a very special place as part of the 48h Neukölln Festival 2024.
