What dance does the cello demand from the musician? How to interpret the punishingly rigid score of the pop song? What is it that moves inside the tragic diva? And is she actually even singing? replay investigates the formal relationships between movement and sound in different cultural spaces.
The new work by Olympia Bukkakis with the two dancers Am Ertl and The Darvish, is a one-hour piece inspired by music videos, drag shows, opera and classical music. Bukkakis takes a critical look at high art’s obsession with dying women, pop culture’s dehumanization and the oppressive hetero- and cisnormativitiy always waiting in the wings of the drag stage. With references to her own biography and a critical view of the social context that produces certain forms, she thus also poses questions about class and cultural hierarchies.
