OUT NOW is Uferhallen’s 2021 annual exhibition, returning for its third official edition from 10 – 13 September. It takes place in Uferhallen’s landmark main hall and combines established with emerging, internal and external positions to present the work of 34 artists and collectives.
Presented in a historic space actively threatened by commercial development, OUT NOW is an exhibition about presence and absence, debut, and expulsion. It commands us to gather and to leave. It presents work that revels in anticipatory and consummatory pleasures alongside that which troubles the reciprocity of hype and value through positions that omit, conceal, or refuse.
Works exhibited explore how artists do – or do not – imbue their surroundings with meaning to such an extent that visibility ultimately accelerates their demise. With this violent cycle of accumulation and extraction in mind, OUT NOW registers a range of media, tones, and textures which in combination suggest that singularity is not always an asset, presence does not mean present, and that the new need not only be a form of triumph but a catalyst for new alliances.
OUT NOW will take place in Uferhallen’s main hall and combine established with emerging, internal and external positions. A weekend of guided tours and open studios will offer visitors insight into the processes of artists who have lived and worked at this cultural hub for decades. Artists Nina Emge and Olamiju Fajemisin will work on-site as part of a new, month-long residency under the mentorship of longtime Uferhallen artist Rosa Barba. OUT NOW will also present a performance program, featuring new commissions by Justin Kennedy and collaborators, and Shade Theret.
