Pinkdot gGmbH is pleased to announce the exhibition VERTIGEM by Berlin-based photographer Rafael Medina, running from November 14th to November 28th, 2024, at the gallery located at Choriner Str. 51, 10435 Berlin. The vernissage to celebrate the exhibition’s opening will take place on November 14th at 7:00 PM.
In the VERTIGEM series, Rafael Medina presents a stunning collection of analog double-exposure photographs that capture his personal experiences and emotions during his first return to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after four years of living in Berlin. Medina explores the tension between familiarity and alienation: “It feels like I was there yesterday, and at the same time, like I was never there.”
The title “Vertigem” (Portuguese for “dizziness” or “vertigo”) conveys the sense of disorientation Medina felt upon revisiting the landscapes and places of his past. The photographs also depict encounters with old friends, some of whom had become women during his time away, capturing moments of memory and nostalgia that blend the past with the present.
About Rafael Medina:
Born in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and now based in Berlin, Rafael Medina holds a degree in Philosophy from UERJ (Rio de Janeiro State University) and studied Visual Arts at EAV – Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2017, Medina has been fully devoted to analog photography, drawn to the materiality of the medium and its creative potential.
Medina is known for documenting the music scene, nightlife, and producing portraits that celebrate bodily diversity and sexuality. His work delves into LGBTQIA+ culture and the club scene, offering an insider’s perspective on the lived experiences of these communities.
His photography has been featured in notable exhibitions such as “Uncensored” and “DISCOnstruction,” as well as “Intimacy: Queer Art from Berlin and Beyond” at the Schwules Museum in Berlin. Medina’s first solo exhibition, “Skin Deep,” offered a poignant visual exploration of the lives of older gay men, highlighting themes of beauty, resilience, and diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community.
