In February 2023, the Komische Oper Berlin will give the starting signal for Schall&Rausch – the new, annual festival for brand-new music theater. On the site of the former Kindl brewery in Berlin-Neukölln, Schall&Rausch invites you to celebrate burning issues and experimental music with pop-cultural glitz and glamour. Unafraid of melodies, beats and strobes, the Komische Oper Berlin brings the music theater to glow for ten days: Performance meets concert, professionals meet amateurs, local meets international.
Be there for …
… Surplus Circus / African Exodus
In African Exodus, seven South African singer-performers explore the migration stories of the Bantu in the Niger-Congo region – a musical journey through Bantu songs, pulsating rhythms and a good dose of humor.
In advance, risk and playfulness go hand in hand at Surplus Circus, when, in keeping with the philosophy of the Centre for the Less Good Idea, seemingly unfinished ideas from African Exodus are improvised together with musicians from the Komische Oper Berlin to create new musical narratives!
Surplus Circus
The sixteen artists, musicians and performers of the Centre for the Less Good Idea and the Komische Oper Berlin have only five days to venture together on this wild ride into the world of the Surplus Circusʼ. In this experiment, German opera meets South African musicians and together they engage in a dialogue that is both musical and performative. The result is a powerful and circus-like evening that gives a stage to the “surplus”, that is, the seemingly surplus artistic ideas that have not yet found their way into a finished piece and yet offer the potential for great magic.
African Exodus
Where do we find what we are looking for when history and research let us down? Where do we go in search of clues? The migratory path of the Bantu peoples is lost in the void. In the rhythmically and physically electrifying performance African Exodus, author and director Sbusiso Shozi, composer Nhlanhla Mahlangu and their team of performers, dancers and musicians go in search of the roots and also the milestones of the Bantu people. Satirically witty and poetically at the same time, they illuminate their journey and show its kinship with countless universal and contemporary stories of displacement and displacement. African Exodus was first performed at the Centre for the Less Good Idea in May 2018 and further developed for Schall&Rausch.
