Tanz im August, presented by HAU Hebbel am Ufer, showcases contemporary dance performances, recognised companies, innovative choreographers and new aesthetics and formats from around the world. This year, 18 dance productions can be experienced at ten venues in Berlin.
The 2024 festival presents works by international artists that focus on migration biographies and cultures of remembrance, among other things. The result is a collection of stories in which the used artistic means and media have a major influence: For example, forms of movement, spoken and sign language, video art and live music point to the manifold lineages of dance and reveal points of connection between sustainability, ecology, dance, and humankind. Between stocktaking, criticism, and utopia, the festival also presents artistic projects that deal with burning, current issues and emergencies in our world.
This year’s program sketches a map of the present state of the world and, starting from there, outlines possible paths to a different reality: a world in which differences are honoured, relations are nurtured, and encounters are seen as an opportunity. In which the bonds of lived solidarity can overcome military, cultural, and geographical boundaries.
