I’m actually not really the type who would reminisce about the past. But when I look back at the year 2013 I have to admit that this year was in many ways special for me. Special because of the things I did and that happened around me, but also because of some personal realizations about myself and my life that ultimately make me a very happy guy. As you guys are somehow part of this life I would like to share these special moments along with some highlights of the blog in 2013…
The first weekend of May has been notable not only for Labour Day, but for art in Berlin as well. For the 11th time 47 galleries (this year) opened their doors from the first until the third of May.
Among this year’s highlights were definitely the large scale sprayed paintings by Katharina Grosse, who inaugurated the new exposition domicile in the St. Agnes church of Johann König. Her bright colorful art is characterized by her demolished paper bits spray technique, as you would normally know from collages. One could not have filled the great room on the first floor of the church any better. Along with other art pieces on the ground floor of the concrete church Jeppe Hein’s mirrored chrome balloons with colorful strings on the ceiling were much admired too. Yesterday the streetfood temple Neue Heimat celebrated their summer Season Opening. Thanks to all the great visitors the place is going to be open from Thursdays to Sundays from now on – that means finally during the week as well! This add-on was and still is celebrated with lots of highlights during the Easter weekend.
The kick-off was made by Dutch singer Qeaux Qeaux Joans who presented her second album “The Ritual” being accompanied by the Berliner Camerata.The combination of classic, pop and electronic elements paired with her voice created a great atmosphere among the audience sitting and standing around her. Just as the little orchestra helped her sometimes similar voice to Banks or Leslie Clio creating new worlds of sound. Once again food lovers could indulge at the wine or oyster bar, as well as at one of the many great food-stalls. Afterwards Natalia Escobar and Adeline provided the appropriate beats at the turntables. We definetly recommend you to stop by during the Easter weekend to enjoy the special program they have put together.

Last Saturday the Berlin Alternative Fashion Week took its second spin. The focus of this fashion event outside the regular international fashion week schedule is on fashion that break the restrictions of wearability. Sometimes more simply IS more. That’s how it went at the 10th anniversary party of Monster Ronson’s Ichiban Karaoke on Monday. Despite many other special guests and performers, like Ziúr and ReveRso, the band Eat Lipstick quite rocked it – not only by celebrating birth(day), when Mad Kate came out naked underneath Anita Drink’s dress. If you didn’t wake up with glitter everywhere the next morning, you’ve cleary done something wrong. Enjoy the photos after the jump.
Most artist biographies are totally boring. They just consist of PR phrases and they just present facts in a factual and objective way. So it is always refreshing if someone dares to do it differently – the Berlin-based DJ and producer duo Kotelett & Zadak for instance. This is how their biography starts: “Where the two actually originate, nobody knows for sure. Rumors have it that they once had a common love for sprat fishing and point their fateful meeting to somewhere on the North German coast. If you believe the various rumors, Zadak lost his pants in a raid by the Department of Fish and Game, while Kotelett, due to an overdose of moonshine, lost his boating license. Both lost their fishing licenses and, whoops!, there went their livelihood… What was left for them to do but abscond to the interior, a bleary-eyed and shady escape to where no one knew them by name. “From now on ….” one of the two is said to have mumbled into his beard; which one is still not known. And so, control rod was quickly exchanged with controller, stroke side with backspin, and fog horn with fog machine.”
